Default Stop Making Sense 4K UHD (1984)

I contacted a representative at Palm Pictures about a remastering and/or 4K release of this wonderful concert and here is what he had to say.

Quote:
Stop Making Sense is available as in HD, through many streaming outlets (iTunes, etc.) as well as on Blu-Ray (Amazon, etc.).

We haven’t begun the process for 4K, but of course as the industry moves that way, we’ll make that available.

Thanks for your inquiry about this amazing film.

It's crying out for a 4K as the original DVD/Blus were from such a poor quality print/transfer.

The 2015 UK edition Blu Ray has been cleaned up supposedly. A company called Second Sight put it out. I saw the Palm Pictures edition on a big screen last week in Liverpool, Uk. Amazing to finally see it in a cinema even with all of the scratches, hairs, cigarette burns and general grunge.

Supposedly the Laserdisc was the best copy, also had the original soundtrack which fans often say they prefer.

I contacted Palm Pictures again to inquire about a potential release.

I was told that they do not have any plans at this time to release it in 4K.

Well, that doesn't make sense.

Just received an email from A24 stating they would bring Stop Making Sense back to theaters and that it is newly remastered in 4K. Hopefully that means a 4K disc is also on the horizon!

Seems like once they have a new 4K master, the expensive part of the process is done...

I hope they don't mess up the audio. Including just the old mix would be fine with me.

If the new Atmos mix on the newly reissued soundtrack album is any indication, I'm a bit worried. But I'll reserve judgement until I've heard the mix fully amplified in a theater.

Anyone see the new release in the theater yet? I can't find any reviews that address the quality of the restoration, or the audio mix, in much detail.

The IMAX theater near me is showing it, but I'm not sure if I'll go. My audio system at home sounds better than the audio at the theater. I'm kinda bummed it's not in the Dolby Cinema theater, then I would go...

I'm no technical expert but it looked and sounded incredible in (lie)MAX.

I wish a theatre near me was playing this, I would love to hear and see this in IMAX.

I saw it twice in IMAX (including the Sept. 11th event screening) the second I time I sat in my preferred seat and really took notice to the new mix which is damn impressive. Sadly no standard theater in the Washington DC area is presenting this in the Dolby Atmos mix, guess that'll have to wait for the eventual Blu-ray / 4K UHD home video release.

The plot thickens… They “enhanced” the hell out of the IMAX version to the point that grain was pretty much nonexistent. The standard DCP had a much more organic, naturally grainy look to it. Hopefully the DCP version will be the one they use for a physical release. They did a really beautiful job with it.

The Atmos mix sounds great. A wonderful job all around

Is this a reliable source? 4K UHD and Blu-ray coming next year, apparently:

Might just wait to see what Second Sight would do with this film first since A24 prices are a little too much (Then again, Second Sight isn’t cheap either).
