Default David Gilmour - Live at Pompeii, 9/29

Quote:
45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows that took place on 7 & 8 July 2016, part of his year-long tour in support of his No.1 album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD.

‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ is an audio experience on its own, while the audio-visual spectacle features lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which specially-created films complement selected songs. Paramount, however, is the incredible music: the show includes songs from throughout David's career, as well as many Pink Floyd classics, including 'One Of These Days', the only song that was also performed at the band’s 1971 show.

Both concerts also saw very special performances of 'The Great Gig In The Sky' from 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' which David rarely plays as a solo artist. The 2-disc concert CD was produced by David Gilmour, and mixed by Andy Jackson and David Gilmour. The 148-minute concert film includes highlights from both shows, filmed in 4k by director Gavin Elder. DVD and Blu-ray versions contain an extra 7-minute documentary by Gavin Elder ‘Pompeii Then And Now’, while the Deluxe Blu-ray 4-disc box contains the 2xCD version, the 1xBlu-ray version, and a full 207 minutes of extra footage: 11 live performances and 5 documentaries, plus bonus collectables. Vinyl lovers can enjoy a deluxe 4xLP version in gatefold sleeves and a hardback slipcase, plus a 24-page photo booklet.

‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ shows an artist at the top of his artistic game, performing incredible material with his world-class band, in a unique setting on one very special occasion.

Such a great guitarist.
Luckily, I got to see Pink Floyd in 87, 88 and in 94 at the Rose Bowl.

I got to see this tour on it's stop in Chicago, almost 20 years after discovering Pink Floyd. I was fighting a head cold against 20-degree weather waiting outside to get in, but it didn't stop me from having a great night.

Guess I'm older than most but I first saw them in 1977 at the Empire Pool Wembley then in 1980/1981 (4 times) at Earls Court London & 1988 at Wembley Stadium.

As for solo tours I saw Dave Gilmour Royal Festival Hall in 2001 & at the Royal Albert Hall 2006 . The great Roger Waters in Earls Court in 1984 and Wembley 1987

I feel very blessed.

This disc will be another great addition to my collection

Again, what does David Gilmour have against playing songs from his 1st two albums? I would rank his self titled album up there with Pink Floyd any day. I will pass.

My first show was the Meddle tour, Nov. 6, 1971. Saw every tour since, incl. the infamous Cleveland World Series of Rock show (Animals) and the real Wall tour (Nassau Coliseum).

I did not care for this tour by Dave as much as the last. Most obviously because of the loss of Rick and its effect on the set list. And Pompeii without "Echoes" just feels incomplete.

Saw this tour at the Hollywood Bowl! Amazing. First ever 'Floyd' show.

The deluxe edition is almost half price from Amazon.it. Could this be expected to be region free?

For what it was, I had an incredible time watching him in concert. But to an extent, I fully agree. That 2006 tour was special, and I'm just very glad it was covered well on two separate releases, something you don't see often with regards to live releases from artists.

I'd still love to see a Blu of the Gdansk show come out at some point. They sounded so much better than on the Royal Albert Hall release, plus the orchestra added quite a bit too.

Atmos mix done but only 5.1 on the Blu.

I'll buy it but that's a shame.

I am still going to buy this but I also wonder if they have learned from the mess that was the first David Gilmour concert blu-ray.

I bought the deluxe Gdansk CD/DVD set because I read somewhere (can't remember) that the DVD was all they could muster for Gdansk.

It had its technical problems but wasn't that lighting/light show partly to blame for making it so hard to capture ? At times during "Echoes" it looked almost like a small thermonuclear device or something was going off.

Whatever the case, it's still a must-have as the On An Island tour rated not only for DG's solo stuff but also for being the best "Not Really Pink Floyd" performance version of Pink Floyd. Not to mention Rick's last hurrah.

My guess is that it was because Blu-ray was almost still kind of a niche thing in 2008 and Sony figured since they had a Blu for the other disc that the risk wouldn't match up to the reward.

For me it's more about finally having the whole concert available to watch, since a third of the show is missing from the DVD. They could put it out bare-bones, or even just on DVD for all I care and I'd be happy to have it.

Gdansk has been run in HD for years on cable channel Palladia. I'm guessing they didn't think Remember That Night sold well enough to justify a separate BD release for Gdansk.

A shame because Gdansk has some of Gilmour's best guitar playing since his Pink Floyd days.

I've had that on my DVR since one of Palladia's early showings of it. And the DVD, when upconverted, tops it IMHO.

BTW, it's no longer called Palladia but rather MTV Live. Still mostly the same programming. They've also been running "David Gilmour : Wider Horizons" , a really nice documentary about David.

I recently picked up an additional channel that is even better for music/music-related ... AXS or Axis TV.
