Default Did Microsoft Jump ship on HD DVD?

Late December it was released (as I'm sure you all know) that Microsoft and Viacom inked a 500 million dollar deal for advertising and "non-exclusive" rights to viacom downloading content. (http://money.cnn.com/2007/12/19/news...07121909)sorry I didn't link it.
The content included various forms of media: ie. films, tv shows and more.
Ok. I thought that 150 Million for Paramount, a company owned by Viacom, was a lot of money to throw away, but 500 Million, and just for downloadable information.

These are my speculations: 1. Microsoft is abandoning HD DVD as the high def disc of the future. Unless they put an HD DVD burner in the 360 it benefits HD DVD none that Microsoft made the deal. 2. If it's a non-exclusive deal Paramount knows Blu is the format choice of the future, or I should rather say, that there is profit to be made in blu for Paramount.

According to sales numbers 3/4 of the market is blu. And I'm sure that all of us (that's probably 9/10 of us) use software made by the giant ape. Viacom knows that supplying 3/4 of the market with products only 1/4 "may" want is stupid. Capatalism is great. Supply and Demand is what this country is based on. The demand is blu. Start supplying it... and more of it.

not yet they aren't. But we already know the only reason they are supporting HD DVD is to destroy Blu-ray with it. They will continue to use HD DVD until their downloading market is bigger than the disc market.
It won't happen but they seem to have a lot of belief that it will having put down $500M for it. Maybe someday it will... but not this decade.

Well, according to Michael Bay, Microsoft's plan is to kill the HD disc formats altogether to want people to get into downlodable movies.

HD-DVD burner in a 360 isn't quite the way to go, methinks... there's no BD burner in a PS3, either. They're consoles, not meant to replace absolutely everything in your home theater unit or your computer.

I agree, but HD DVD (seemingly backed by microsoft) gains nothing from downloadable content, unless it could burn that content onto a high def disc.
And you must admit... the ps3 is way more than a console.

Yes, but so was the PS2, XBox, and most other disc-based consoles.

I'm just saying... the XBox 360 doesn't necessarily need a burner to benefit from it. Of course, they were idiots for not putting the HD-DVD in the console to begin with -- they should've learned from Sega's mistake: console add-ons rarely work out.

The thinking is that everyone will be happy with movies on their HDD (with expiry dates and/or with 720p lower bitrates due to bw limits).

The mediaplayers will be pcs running Vista (or downgraded back to XP MCE).

--- When you're surrounded by people with PCs running windows, you tend to have a very strange view of the world, and pesky little details like actual measured peak internet throughput into each N.A. home can get removed from presentation slides to be substituted with theoretical numbers in an unpredictable future timeframe.

I am not picking on you but I did see a hack where they downgraded the firmware in the PS3 where it actually can be used as a burner, a video might be on the net. I am assuming that this is a trick up Sonys sleeve to make the PS3 a blu-burner IF MS did release a Hd-DVD burner in the 360 sux box.

I agree with you 100 percent. HD DVD lost the format war by not putting a player in the 360. Playstation was criticized moderately for a delayed release, but they knew what they were doing.

Whah? I think you may be thinking about the first Panasonic Blu-ray deck. It had their burner drive with firmware downgraded to read-only.

Wouldn't this help out blu-ray in the long run, strictly from a disc manufacturing standpoint?
