Default Receiver Options

Am about to finally upgrade my recevier from my old Sony to one of the following:

- Yamaha RX-V661 - $514 - 2 hdmi in 1 out
- Denon AVR-1908 - $599 - 2 hdmi in 1 out
- Onkyo TX-SR605 - $499 - 2 hdmi in 1 out
- Onkyo TX-SR705 - $699-799 - 3 hdmi in 1 out

I know eveyrone has a different setup and may want/need different features however for me, here is my setup that may help in getting opinions in one of these receivers.

- 50" Panny Plasma
- Directv STB
- PS3

Currently using optical into the Sony receiver as there are no HDMI inputs and HDMI to the Panny. The speakers I have are a 5.1 system.

Guessing I would run HDMI from PS3 and Directv STB to IN and OUT to the Panny.

Suggestions on the above receivers and THANKS!!!

Thought about how many Optical in/out's that they have? As opposed to using soly HDMI's for everything for vid/aud. I have my setup as optical to receiver and HDMI to TV (PS3). I found that running the PS3 HDMI through my receiver to my TV degraded vid quality dramatically.

Borrik, what kind of receiver do you have? I thought running HDMI to reciever and then reciever to TV was better than running optical to receiver to HDMI to TV. The latter is what I have now but it's becuase my old Sony does not have HDMI inputs. Main reason why I am looking to upgrade to one of the ones I listed.

gearyt - how do you like the 705? I have read nothing but good things about it. Just wondering if it is overkill for my setup. That is why I listed the four options I am looking at.

I would go for either Onkyo since you are only using 5.1 and having the advanced codecs could be useful for the future if you ever get a new player that bitstreams.

Thanks Downhere...heavily leaning towards the Onkyo TX-SR705. The folkes here at Abt Electronics are good to us and they are offereing me a great deal on it.

You mean my PS3 can't bitstream uncompressed trueHD audio?

If you can get a good deal on the 705, then go for it. You will not be disappointed.

No, the PS3 cannot bitstream TrueHD, but it can send it out as Multi-Channel PCM so your good either way. Hopefully it will do DTS MA soon as well, as it does have the horsepower to do it.

I love my 705 and am having no problems, other than It made me spend money to add the 2 additional speakers (7.1)

I felt it was something I could grow into ( see speakers ) and I think the THX cert is worth a few bucks... again, primary reason was avail... but never regreted it

Thanks all. Told them to have the Onkyo TX-SR705 ready. Picking it up tomorrow. Can't wait. Like Christmas all over again

gearyt, you bring up a good point. Might have to get 2 more speakers to really make my wife deaf. Maybe a couple good stand-up ones since I ran the other 4 in the walls when I built the room.

Regarding my setup, am I correct in that I would run:

Directv STB - HDMI to new Onkyo TX-SR705
PS3 - HDMI to new Onkyo TX-SR705
Onkyo TX-SR705 - HDMI to Panny TH-50PX600U

And let the receiver do all the switching. No longer need any of the opticals?

Thanks again!

That sounds right; just hope the Onkyo doesn't degrade the video signal while passing it to your TV.

I hope not. It shouldn't I wouldn't think but what do I know...the Onkyo TX-SR705 is still sitting in the back seat of my car.

Thanks all. I do really appreciate it. I just took the new 705 out of the box and can't stop staring at it especially at the back.

I love my mac, I also have a iBook G4 for travel....

I'm just a pure path guy; but I guess if I wanted to take advantage of uncompressed audio from the HDMI then I'm going to have to upgraded to a HDMI switching receiver. I'm just not prepared to get rid of my NAD yet. Congrats on your purchase!

Onkyo 605 or 705 hands down. I have a Yamaha RX-Z1 flagship that retailed for $2799 5 years ago. I was saving for the new flagship Yamaha RX-Z11, but I listened to the Onkyo 805 and it absolutely blew me away. In the past I never cared for any of the receiver offerings in the <$1k price range, but the newest Onkyo line changed my mind.
