‘True Lies’ Movie Rebooted As TV Series By Fox With McG, Marc Guggenheim & James Cameron Producing



True Lies, James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie, is headed to television. Fox has given a put pilot commitment to an hourlong reboot of the film, which comes from McG, Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim, Cameron’s Lighthouse Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.

Guggenheim is writing the adaptation, with McG set to direct. The two are executive producing alongside Cameron and Jon Landau via Lighthouse, as well as Rae Sanchini and Mary Viola.

20th Century Fox TV, whose sister feature studio produced the movie, and where McG is under an overall deal, is the studio. 20th TV had been trying to put together a True Lies series with McG since last season.

McG will focus on the project after recently exiting over creative differences from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s upcoming drama series 9-1-1 for Fox, on which he was to serve as director/executive producer.

Yeah, Fox doesn't bring a lot of series out on blu ray at all, and if anything they may do a new release of the movie to tie it into the series.

I would be happy if we could at least get an anamorphic version of True Lies on DVD at this point. Such a crime that this movie hasn't been released properly just because Cameron doesn't find terrorism funny after 9/11. At least that was the excuse back in the day. Seeing that Cameron is a producer on this tv series, maybe there is hope.

Thats not entirely true as FOX`s Lethal Weapon got BluRay release before season 2 debut.

But... Im still waiting for The Exorcist BluRay weeks from season 2 debut

Fox has nothing to do with Lethal Weapon getting a Blu-ray release. It's a Warner Brothers production and the production company is the one who decides whether a show will get a Blu-ray release. Fox just pays a license fee to air the show.

I'm surprised this is being done, considering Cameron's fairly-recent comments from just three years ago...

We abandoned True Lies 2 after 9/11, because we didn't think a comedy about fundamentalist terrorists was so funny anymore. And then we never picked it up again.

If thats true and i believe it why are they bring it now?
I tought its a good reboot but they need to change the way they approach the terrorism. There are too many ways to keep the terrorism serious without compromising the funny stuff...

I doubt it; they'll probably expand the original story like with the first season of Lethal Weapon.

McG’s ‘True Lies’ TV Show Is Heading to Disney+

Talk about a new spin on the James Cameron classic True Lies has been around for decades, but it appears the material is being revived at an unlikely home. We learned in 2017 that a planned sequel to the 1994 action-comedy was being scrapped in favor of a TV series adaptation executive produced by Cameron and directed by McG (Charlie’s Angels). And today, while appearing on Collider Live to discuss his upcoming Netflix film Rim of the World, McG revealed the TV show is now in the works at Disney+:

“Well right now my new thing for television is I’m doing True Lies at Disney+. Which is exciting. I’m writing that one, which is very exciting, because I’m so passionate about that story where you think you know your partner but you don’t.”

This makes sense, as the first iteration of the TV project was set up through 20th Century Fox, which Disney just acquired. We still don’t know precisely what to expect content-wise from Disney+ beyond kid-centric TV series, Marvel live-action shows like Loki, and the Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian, but this is a curious addition to that lineup and may give us a slight hint as to the tone of this True Lies show. Keep in mind a planned High Fidelity TV series starring Zoe Kravitz was moved from Disney+ to Hulu (which Disney now also owns) for content reasons.

As for what the True Lies TV show will entail, McG says he’ll be spending the summer writing it, but the door is open for Arnold Schwarzenegger to be involved in some capacity:

“There’s talk of that. It’s largely rebooted but there may be a spot there, we’ll see.”

'True Lies' Reboot From James Cameron in the Works at CBS

CBS is the latest network to attempt to bring True Lies to television. The broadcast network late Wednesday handed out a formal pilot order to a reboot of 1994 feature film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Burn Notice's Matt Nix is attached to pen the script for the drama with the film's writer and director, James Cameron, set to exec produce the potential series. McG, who has been attached to previous attempts to reboot the 20th Century Fox film, is also set to direct the pilot and exec produce. Disney-owned 20th Television is the studio on the pilot.

McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision president Mary Viola and frequent Cameron collaborator Rae Sanchini of his Lightstorm Entertainment banner will also exec produce, with the latter having been credited in the same capacity on the movie.

The pilot has the same concept as the movie: Shocked to discover that her bland and unremarkable computer consultant husband is a skilled international spy, an unfulfilled suburban housewife is propelled into a life of danger and adventure when she’s recruited to work alongside him to save the world as they try to revitalize their passionless marriage.

This is the latest attempt to bring True Lies to television. Fox developed a take in 2017 with Arrow's Marc Guggenheim attached to pen the script. It never moved forward. McG in 2019 floated that a True Lies TV series was in the works for Disney+.

True Lies grossed $378.8 million worldwide (on a budget of $115 million). The action drama co-starring Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Eliza Dushku and Charlton Heston — itself a remake of a 1991 French comedy — earned Curtis a Golden Globe win for best actress. [×]
