Great news indeed... I had been thinking about getting the Japanese release but will now hold out for this one.

Actually, a very cheap edition has just been released in Italy... but, as I was telling amoergosum in private, the master used for the Italian Blu seems to be the same, old master used for the Japanese release. I don't own it personally, but several buyers in this thread say so... here are some caps (not full resolution) from the disc. Also, it was squeezed on a BD 25...

Locked. The only StudioCanal Lynch release that's Region A friendly is the Optimum/German StudioCanal release of "The Elephant Man".

This needs a new master so badly. The Japan release looks better, but it still doesn't look great.

So the German release has had more sharpening applied.
Glad I picked up the Japanese release a couple of years ago.

agreed. it's disappointing for such a great film. if you could try to take any positives away from this; it at least got a blu-ray release and probably looks better than if universal got their hands on it.

I have a Spanish copy which I assume is most likely the same master but it has forced Spanish subtitles if you choose the English audio. Does the German disc do that or are subtitles always optional? Experience tells me it probably leaves 'em optional, but I don't really want to buy it just to find out that it's the same (especially given that it doesn't look like it has a better encode).

I don't have the German disc so I can't give you a definite answer, but I do have quite a few German BD editions of other films and none of them have forced subs.

The German Blu-ray has German subtitles and yes, they are optional.
