I perfer the streaming solution myself as well. It's also rather fun to be able to describe that I'm listening to music being streamed from my computer, to my playstation 3, over the internet, to my psp. Which I'm stealing bandwidth for from the inlaws.

well i will try to play around with it for a while and see what happens... i have 7000 mp3s and it seems if i start in the D's it kinda stays in the D's and maybe the C/E's, it doesn't randomize the hole thing

I just got my PS3 today and have been considering this as an option. What's the best setup for having an external HDD hooked up to the PS3 with your music?

Right now I have an Apple Airport Extreme router with a 500gb MyBook attached to its USB port, so I can share my iTunes library across all 4 of the Macs in our house. There's about 60gb of music on it (legal, no less!). My only gripe is that the AX has a firmware glitch that randomly drops the drive, which is a PitA.

If I connect a HDD to the PS3, can my whole network see the drive? Or just the PS3? If the whole network can see the drive, then it would make sense to just point iTunes to that network drive on each machine, no?

windows media connect works with mp3, mpeg and sometimes wmv. tversity works with pretty much everything. Good stuff.

Best part is using the PSP as a remote play controller and stream to it wirelessly from the PC via the PS3. Technology is wonderful

With Macs you would have to to use something mac friendly. I believe either Eyeconnect or Twonkymedia are the most mac friendly servers.

I actually also use the streaming option - even though i have a 500GB external drive. Between my wife's music and mine, we have around 19,000 MP3's.

I don't fancy having a USB cable permanently coming out of the front of my PS3...for me, the biggest design flaw of the PS3 is not having any USB ports in the back...had that been the case, i could use my external HDD and have it hidden out of sight.

Hmm, that's a tempting idea for a custom USB hub job. For horizontal mounting, would be fairly easy, hmm.

problem I have is alot of my files are from the iTunes store, and the only way to convert those into mp3 files is to burn them to a CD as an audio cd (not a data cd) and then import them again as an mp3.
It would take longer and cost more (price of a lot of cds). However I would love to have all my music stream to my speaker system. think i might just hook up a mac mini or appletv to my tv

And is frustrating... Very frustrating to do that.

Most of the time, it's would have been cheaper to just buy the physical disc and rip to your own audio standards .
