Default Netflix's "House of Cards" spinoff

‘House of Cards’ Spinoffs in the Works at Netflix (EXCLUSIVE)

Quote:
Netflix is moving ahead with plans for a “House of Cards” spinoff.

Variety has learned that the streaming service and producer Media Rights Capital are in very early stages of development on multiple ideas for a potential spinoff. One concept revolves around Doug Stamper, the political aide-de-camp played by actor Michael Kelly in the first five seasons of the political drama, with Eric Roth set to write. Roth served as an executive producer on the first four seasons of “House of Cards” and is currently exec producing TNT’s “The Alienist.”

At least two other spinoff ideas are also being explored, though writers have not yet been attached to all of them. All the potential series take place in the same universe as “House of Cards,” a political thriller about Frank Underwood, a devious congressman played by Kevin Spacey who ascends to the role of President of the United States through political and criminal machinations.

Spokespersons for Netflix and Media Rights Capital declined to comment.

Plans for the spinoff have not been impeded by the uncertainty around the sixth season of “House of Cards” that surfaced Sunday with allegations against Spacey of sexual assault. Netflix on Monday confirmed that “House of Cards” will end after the upcoming sixth season, currently in production in Baltimore. In a statement, the streaming service and MRC also said that they had sent executives to Baltimore Monday to meet with cast and crew after actor Anthony Rapp told Buzzfeed in an interview that Spacey had sexually assaulted him when Rapp was 14 years old.

Spacey is currently not on set for “House of Cards.” Sources close to the production say that season six had been intended as the final installment of the show.

“House of Cards” is widely credited as the show that put Netflix on the original programming map when it premiered in 2013. The series has been nominated for 53 Primetime Emmy Awards — including five nominations for outstanding drama series.

By putting multiple potential spinoffs in development, Netflix is following the same path pursued by HBO with “Game of Thrones,” as the premium service has assigned multiple writers to develop various takes on prequels set within the fantasy universe created by George R.R. Martin and in which “Game of Thrones” is set.

Stamper is an interesting character. Maybe show his early years becoming a top staffer in DC. Stamper is excellent character beyond he's so LAYERED and Kelly is able to do that SILENTLY

Doug Stamper character give me the creeps and my only wish in HoC is that he gets his come-uppance. if the spin-off is about him then i'm sitting this one out

Stamper is my favorite character, but it's more of a love/hate kind of thing. The man is clearly a tortured soul.

I wouldn't mind a show starring Remy Danton (Mahershala Ali). Seeing stuff from a lobbyist's POV would be interesting, and there would be no shortage of intriguing things to cover there.

Speaking of Stamper, anyone know why he'd inject alcohol into his mouth with a syringe????

I wouldn’t watch it. As the series went on I almost stopped watching when the episodes got uber Doug focused. So depressing.

I love House Of Cards but the spin-off would be boring if it's with Doug. Doug needs other characters to keep him interesting and something to do.

I guess it will be interesting to see how the narrative would carry over into the format of another series with the same content & premise.
I do believe Netflix when they mentioned in their initial release that despite the allegations against Kevin Spacey, that the series was intended to end after season 6. Based on the contracts with the actors & their agreements lasting no longer than 7 years, and the fact that the show is no longer in its' peak are all prime notivating factors to wind-down on the material (at least in it's current form).

But I'll echo Jessica Chastain's remarks & say that Robin Wright is perfectly capable of driving the series herself. I don't know if the story would be as interesting, but I think it's worth the effort. Having said that, this supposed spin-off appears to be taking things into different directions.
It's a great show with unique writing -- but it's not my favorite series & it has started to show it's age a bit.

I hope they choose the main actor/actress wisely.

I hope Netflix learn from this and now artificially stretch out a TV series like that out again. Now we're left with an incomplete series that doesn't have an ending because they wanted to stretch it out. Otherwise it would have been wrapped up.

It's a harder sell on demand and Blu-ray/4k if the series doesn't have a proper ending.

Looks like it was more because Spacey wanted to "stretch it out"

Why is it incomplete if they’re doing a final season without spacey?

Guy I worked with for a day a few weeks back was cast in the upcoming season and had basically written it off, like it's not gonna happen. Terrible situation for cast and crew, I just hope they're first in line for jobs on the spinoff.

It's now official that the sixth and final season of House of Cards is a go:

Quote:
The popular political drama House of Cards will have a sixth and final season without its Oscar-winning star Kevin Spacey.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said the show will enter production next year, with actor Robin Wright in the lead.

The eight-episode season will “bring closure of the show for fans,” and bring back to work some 2,000 people in Baltimore whose livelihoods depend on the show, Sarandos said today at UBS’s Global Media and Communications Conference in New York.

Excellent. Wright-Penn is more than capable of fronting the show.
