The Lord of the Rings could be the next big TV adaptation.
Warner Bros. Television, whose feature film counterpart produced the feature film series, is in preliminary stages of discussions for a potential TV series based on the J.R.R. Tolkien best-sellers. Amazon Studios, who has a new genre-focused push under company CEO Jeff Bezos, has emerged as a potential buyer. Amazon Studios and Warner Bros. Television declined comment. Sources stress that a deal for a Lord of the Rings TV series is far from official. Talks are said to be focusing on rights issues with the Tolkein estate; the project has yet to even go out to search for a potential writer. More to come. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...-works-1054978 ![]() We already have Peter Jackson's Magnum Opus of a trilogy. |

Sure hope its not gonna be on Amazon.
I won't ever support then after they pulled the plug on the De Niro project. Love LOTR though. Perfect trilogy |

It was always my understanding that the Tolkein estate would never release the movie/TV rights for anything other than The Hobbit and LOTR. Unless that changes, I'm assuming this is more LOTR.
On one hand, I see the potential for a full-blown series to include all those little bits of the original books that never made it into the films (like Tom Bombadil or the scourging of the Shire). But I really hate how TV shows today drag things on and on, and bloating up LOTR even more than the 12-hour movies is a bit much imo. I'll probably just stick with the films. |

The estate have sued to keep anything non The Hobbit and LOTR out of film and television. Tolkien himself sold those rights before his death so they couldn't block them. They have blocked Peter Jackson and WB from using anything from the other books in the films. They have also sued to block certain merchandise from being made outside the original scope of what was agree upon with Tolkien.

I also just had a thought that could either make things interesting or really muck it all to hell: how much of WB's other Middle Earth projects would wind up bleeding into this? If the LOTR series winds up having episodes that focus on Tauriel or Talion, it would stray much further from the source material.

If this is really supposed to be part of Bezos' push to compete with Game of Thrones, I dunno how they do that by making a series out of a book that's already been adapted to such enormous acclaim and popularity (and basically paved the way for Game of Thrones to exist in the first place). This seems like something new; if not exactly "original," then perhaps adapted from something that hasn't been adapted yet. Which I know doesn't gel with the whole "that's not possible because of how Tolkien sold off the rights" thing, but hey, the fact that there are apparently negotiations of some kind going on might point to the estate being willing to work with Amazon/WB on this.
At least I hope. |
