Default Can you upscale BRs with the PS3?

Is the PS3 capable of upscaling SD portions of BR films? If so, how can you do it?

uh... no.
What you are calling the SD portion of a BD is already encoded at 1080p. The DVD upscaler is not going to be engaged since the source format is not a DVD (or SD originating source at 480).

and plus i dont think there will be any new firmware update that will do it because it will be like why bother putting it in SD anyways if its going to be upscaled anyways?

Thanks. I was just wondering bc it only shows up as 480 on my tv and was wondering if I could make it output as 1080i or 720p

The BD's are already 1080p, you probably need to change the settings on your PS3 or TV to 1080p.

I think he is talking about the special features. They are sometimes encoded in 480. Also some movies that have several intros (like producers, studios etc...) switch back and forth at the beginning of the film. Relentless Enemies, for example, goes from 1080, to 480, to 1080 back to 480 and then finally 1080 when the movie starts. Gets kinda annoying.

There is a good majority of "special features" that are in fact 480. I would imagine that the ps3 would upscale the 480 stuff just like a regular dvd.

My Sony receiver can upscale any video signal to 1080p anyway, so I don't worry about the ps3 doing it. So, even the original NES system can be upscaled, but that doesn't neccessarily mean it will help.

arent the sides just filled in making it recorded at 1080p so you cant upscale it because it isnt actually 480?

No, as has been stated, the features that are in 480 are actually on the disc in 480. It saves space on the disc of course. It *is* really annoying when your TV has to try keeping up with the resolution changes in some spots. I haven't tried upscaling any of them though, in fact I have yet to try the PS3's upscaler as I have a pretty decent standalone upscaler that doesn't have any fan noise at all

yes the TV keeps switching back and forth between 1080i and 480 when I play special features bc alot of BR films have special features that are 480. The PS3 upscales regualr DVDs but doesnt seem to upscale signals that are 480 from the BR

My Samsung HDTV upscales to 1080p @ 60mhz automatically, so I see a quick flicker when the signal switches from True 1080p @ 24mhz.

I hope going forward, ALL content will be presented in high def. Like the Simpson's Movie.
