I can't wait for this! Especially since I won't be able to see it in the theater.

Do we know for sure if this, or The Breadwinner for that matter, is going to be distributed by Universal or Shout Factory?

Shout Factory = nicer packaging & disc-art
Universal = better digital copy/s

EDIT: The Breadwinner is coming out on Blu-ray March 6th by GKIDS and Universal.
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=22757

2nd EDIT: The Breadwinner is only available on DVD here in Canada!

Saw the film. I may not be in a hurry to buy it on the first day (of course, hardcore Ghibli fans will have to for the slipcovers alone).

I saw this in the theater last night and it had the GKIDS logo at the front of the film. So I would think it would be distributed the same as the recent Ghibli reissues.

According to amazon it's Universal. Looking at the temporary cover art it looks like a Universal release as well. Personally, I prefer the Universal releases because you get a legit digital copy.

Is it bad... or you just don't need it right away since you just saw it?

If it's great or I love it, it would be a day one purchase. But it's only serviceable enough that it didn't leave me wanting.

Saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it. Goregous movie and amazing music. Its like Harry Potter meets Kiki's Delivery Service.

it seems to be an annoying trend that the US home video counterparts of Studio Ghibli movies never seem to have their original theatrical mixes intact - the Japanese 4K UHD is DTS-X (7.1.4) yet for the US DCP it was downfolded to 5.1 --- ugh, typical, gonna wait and see what and how this turns out for the bluray release here in the States or if the import Hong Kong version will be DTS-X encoding on their bluray edition.

Actually, it seems like the 5.1 mix IS the theatrical mix, even in Japan, and the DTS:X mix on the Japanese 4K version is a remix.
But yeah, the 6.1 being downfolded to 5.1 thing on most of the Ghibli Blu-rays with 6.1 audio is terrible.

And I am also hoping for an American 4K release, with DTS:X Master Audio for both Japanese and English, as well as DTS-HD MA 5.1 at the same time, if possible.

If not, then I hope this will be similar to their 4K releases of Pitch Perfect 1 & 2 where the DTS:X remix is only on the 4K UHD while the Blu-ray is only the original DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix.

Does anyone know if the Japanese 4k release has English audio or English subtitles?

The thread in International Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K Movies says:

English subtitles will be provided for the main feature.

I was heartbroken when I wasn't able to see this in theaters, so I hope a release date is given soon so I can watch this ASAP.

Do we know how likely this is? Would definitely go for that over a UK BD release!

I really like how they have a logo like Ghibli with Mary as the mascot. I look foward to a nice, big Ponoc film collection.
