I hope this transfer gets an English-friendly release soon. Looks like an actual hi-def image as opposed the upscaled Australian disc.

There's also a release a little later this year in Germany, but I doubt it will be English friendly. I might have to cave in and add my own subtitles, but I'm hoping a UK or US release will be announced soon.

The Austrailan BD release is a direct cull from US DVD release from Strand... only worse.

I went ahead and picked up the Italian release. I've only had a chance to check out a couple of scenes, but it's such a huge improvement. It was worth the time spent to add subtitles. Of course, now a UK release will probably get announced.

Let's hope so! This is one of his best and deserves the red carpet treatment, which Tartan Films did with their long ago special edition DVD release.

I still have that one. I think I sold my US DVD though. A US blu-ray release would be nice too, as long as I'm wishing. With all the delays on the German release though, I figured better safe than sorry. And best to grab it now before it goes OOP and commands extravagant prices.

It's the best DVD release, however, this is crying out for royal treatment on BD. Its DVD transfers reproduce the theatrical look, initially grainy and dark but calming to pristine beauty. That said, the film's impact on any DVD is severely muted. Scenes from the Rectum are merely dark and hard to make out. I saw this at the cinema (with a real projectionist) and these scenes were infernally crowded and nightmarish.

Even with the greatest care taken during authoring of a hi-def print for home video, even the BD format will struggle to replicate the intensity (as if it wasn't already) of this film on a big screen (with correctly calibrated equipment).
