I like the ability to download extra features (ala the Will Smith clip), other than that, just the same CRAP that I never used on HD DVD!

It will be nice to have another talking point taken away from HD DVD, not that it'll matter anymore...

2.0 excites me more than 1.1.

if online interactive features are done correctly they could be cool. stuff like getting insurance quotes and buying things is not cool. i was thinking that with something like star wars it would be cool if you could pause the movie, click on an object on teh screen and then it would take you to the starwars.com database and you could learn all about whatever you just clicked on.

I might look at the PiP once or twice to see what it's like, but the online features....meh.

I want to have the special stuff because it's there and HD-DVD did, but honestly I rarely watch any of it anyway. It's not a selling point for me, but I'm not willing to throw it out with the bathwater either. When I watch special content, I want to watch it separately, and in HD.

I've never put a DVD in my computer to take advantage of the web links, and I seriously doubt I'll do the web enabled content even if I had a web-capable player.

They would have to be SERIOUSLY cool 'live' features for me to care at all, including them better not drive up the cost of the disc, and they better not be a vehicle for adware.

Since most BD players don't come with keyboards, I'm curious to know how long the 'chat live with others watching the same movie' will remain in fad territory.

A IMDB (constantly updated) type list would be cool as well!

While this is a 'seriously cool' feature I'm talking about below, with the storage capacity of a BD this kind of thing should be included on the disc anyway and not require a download to access.

I think we won't know the extent of BD-Live for many years. The availability of a full programming language (BD-J), and the requirement of a minimum of 1GB of non-volatile storage on BD-Live players, will make for all sorts of fascinating things.

Maybe some of those will be exciting enough to drive adoption.

I'm mainly just about the movies.

I will probably eventually check some of this stuff out just to see what it is like, but it isn't a selling point for me.

Default What I'd like to see in interactive

The only interest I would have in interactive would be, if there could be a master presenter controlling playback of video in all devices (I think this might be possible).

A number of years ago I was at a presentation Roger Ebert gave. I can't remember the movie he went through now, but basically he played out a whole movie pausing intermittently, giving a few thoughts, and took some comments/questions from the audience.

Something like that in BD Live could be awesome, have some movie moderator set up a room with around fifty slots, and then at a specific time the doors close and everyone is watching together controlled by the moderator. He could pause and offer comments, and you could have a running commentary on the side if you were interested in seeing other thoughts.

In general I don't see the point of chatting with other people also watching the movie unless everyone is in sync. Outside of that one feature, I'm not sure I find interactive content all that interesting - you can download new trailers from lots of other sources, not sure I need to do that from the middle of watching a movie or even in the middle of going through a disc content. The ability to have dynamically updated additions and extras could be kind of cool, but I've always been reluctant to rely on too much content being on servers that can go away, or not be accessible if the internet goes out. Probably I will mostly not use whatever interactive features are offered.

Even though it is probably a feature I would rarely use, I would with Planet Earth though, I still think it is a great feature to have. There are people out there that would use this feature. Also, as mentioned before, it is another highly touted talking point from HD-DVD that has just been taken away from them. This is making them look more insignificant every time we take a talking point away from them.

Downloading extra subtitles is about the extent I can think of how it can be useful. Someone once said you can chat on the internet with your BD player. Yes! Chat! Using a remote control!

Need I say more?

I have to say that something like that does sound rather cool. It got me thinking another cool idea would be a user controlled Wiki site for a movie that users could dynamically define regions of a movie clip and then make a comment about that or link it to something, kind of like how users can comment on regions of an image on Flickr.

But is that something more a feature of the movie disc itself, or some kind of hybrid player with that as an overlay to any movie? That seems more valuable.

For me, it's all a waste of money. All I want is the best movie and sound quality, period. I view this interactive stuff as something the engineers figured out how to do, not what the public was demanding. Sort of the technical tail wagging the dog.

At the Blu-ray booth at CES, a prototype Panasonic player was showing an "Alien vs. Predator" movie in which the viewer can get involved by bringing up an on-screen gun, controlled by the remote, and shooting at monsters to score points.
With this description of the CES demonstration of interactive use of the new Panasonic player, I rest my case as to how worthless it is. Just what consumers were demanding, an opportunity to shoot monsters while watching a movie.

I'd rather they put all the extras on a separate disc if possible. But as long as it not make any impact on the AV quality of the movie, I don't care. Apart from watching a "making of" featurette every now and then all the other features are just a waste IMO.

This is what I don't get...all these BD die hard so down on internet features. There are some of us who think gaming is the dummest ass thing to have in a home theater, too. I would expect that you would encourage this medium to appeal to the likes of the broadest audience possible.

Seriously, J6P is satisfied with SDDVD and 2.0 sound. Perhaps we should stop there, because the mass market is fine with it.
