Some very intriguing descriptive passages from quite a rave review by Indiewire:

Quote:

The director of "Kaili Blues" returns with a remarkable new kind of filmmaking experience.

First things first: Bi Gan’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” has nothing to do with the Eugene O’Neil play of the same title, but that’s not the only misdirection in play. The Chinese director’s sophomore effort is a fascinating application of filmmaking innovation toward expressionistic ends. Bi’s lyrical neo-noir begins with the poetic tale of a man returning to his hometown and searching for a long-lost love, then finds him putting his 3D glasses on at a movie theater — a cue for the audience to follow suit, as the movie launches into a staggering 55-minute long take shot entirely in 3D.

That gimmick might sound neat on paper, but it reaches a new level of cinematic intrigue as an immersive experience, unfolding within a surreal context that combines technical wizardry with high art. The unexpected love child of Wong Kar-wai and Andrei Tarkovsky, “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” transforms from a lush, slow-burn pastiche to an audacious filmmaking gamble while maintaining the pictorial sophistication of its earlier section. It’s both languorous and eye-popping at once.

For the first hour, viewers may feel silly holding onto glasses that they have no reason to wear; by the end, they’ll want to keep them on for good.

Grade: A

I hope we get to see this in 3D in theaters locally. It's becoming my most anticipated 3D movie of 2018.

If this comes on Blu-ray, there could be an interruption of concentration when 3D signal is activated if one makes preferential adjustments or has active glasses to turn on.

Okay, so this was not a native 3D film, the 3D shot was post converted...

Quote:
Scope: What was the nature of these tests that you were doing? Was it for perfecting the choreography of the camera’s and actors’ movements?

Bi: It was mainly a time when I was testing a few different cameras, to decide which one I would use. I did this for a full year. There’s this German camera that I worked with for a while, which is a smaller 3D camera, and the biggest problem was that, since everything in the shot was going to be filmed at night, I needed a camera that would work well with low light, and unfortunately the small camera was not able to do that very well. The other option was to use two regular cameras. This looked great for static shots, but that whole rig ended up being too heavy for the Steadicams. So the testing phase was a lot about finding the best kind of camera to use for the shot.

Scope: What camera did you settle on?

Bi: I eventually decided to film the 3D sequence using just one Red camera, which meant that I needed to learn certain things I hadn’t planned on, like how to place a camera like that onto a plane so that it could translate easily into 3D. I also spent a long time researching the history of 3D, learning the rules of 3D, and asking myself if I should try to disrupt these rules and do my own version of the format, or if I should stick to the rules.

Scope: In ultimately deciding to shoot with only one Red camera, you therefore had to produce the image’s 3D illusions with a post-conversion process. For you, is there a significant difference in the 3D experience when the stereo image is created with computer-generated effects rather than the presence of a second camera lens?

Bi: I’m not sure. To me, I can’t see a difference between how the shot came out in the post-conversion process and the tests we were doing with the actual 3D cameras. Because I learned the rules about how to correctly shoot 3D cinema, I was able to make sure that we shot it as though we were filming it with a 3D camera, following the same rules. In the end, I can’t say I feel a difference between the post-converted image we ended up with and the shot as I envisioned it in my head.

Probably not. Most likely the whole film will be in 3D mode. The 2D beginning will just be in 2D so that you don't require the glasses.

Twixt (2011) uses this same method. There are just two 3D scenes, rest of the movie is in 2D. But the TV stays in the 3D mode all the time.

Interesting. I'm surprised they converted it though.

Hopefully it's a strong conversion, unlike with Tron Legacy, where in the intro real world, everything's in 2D, but then when we enter the Grid, everything goes to 3D and it's hardly noticeable from the 2D. Not a good way to showcase what 3D can really offer, especially since that was filmed in 3D. It boils down to the decision maker who approved of the mild 3D in Tron Legacy for most of the film.

There's a pretty good chance this will play at TIFF. I'll check it out if it does

Kino bought the US right of this film? Then a 3D blu-ray is likely on the way!

Yes, Kino Lorber did pickup the U.S. rights of the film.

Kino Lorber has a pretty good history when it comes to releasing titles on blu ray 3D.

I'll be surprised if this movie gets a blu ray 3D release by them, especially a Chinese film converted to 3D in post production.

I’m guessing this would be locked to region A?

Based on this quote from a Kino Lorber executive, sounds like there are clearly 3D American plans for the film. Though of course that might just be theatrically (the article mentions a Spring 2019 theatrical release)

“We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Bi Gan’s extraordinary coup de cinema to North American audiences,” Lidell said. “Bi has taken the one-shot feat of Sokurov’s Russian Ark to even greater heights by adding 3D. The result is mesmerizing

I really hope Kino does release it in 3D and that it sells well for them to pursue other Asian licensing deals. Kino has been a good ally to 3D, especially compared to Well Go who consistently lack 3D on their Asian titles and force us to import.

Does anyone know what's happening with this movie? I really want to get this on 3d Blu Ray. It's been on Kino's website for a while as a theatrical release with options to book it, but the movie has already run its course across festivals and I'm not sure anyone's going to care to see it in a theatre in 2019 in North America. Is this on DVD anywhere on the planet yet? Seems like a great release for next year on Blu Ray, not sure what's happening. Would be a shame as I would imagine this is the only 59-minute 3d sequence shot ever released no? We're not at the end of 2018 and I don't see any mention of a DVD anywhere. I see it's being released theatrically in China on the 31st of this month, and in France next month, but nothing else is listed on IMDB.

Most likely Kino will give it a very short limited theatrical release in 2019 and then hopefully release it on disc shortly after.

Default Post converted? Sad face. :(

Guess I've been living under a rock for while so somehow I missed this film. Anyway, it's being released here in China on Dec. 31 so I'll try to catch a screening, especially to see the much talked about 55-min one shot sequence in 3D.

As a big fan of 3D, I'm a little disappointed that it was post converted but it seems it was due to technical reasons to shoot that one shot sequence with a steady cam. Though the director himself stated that he couldn't see the difference between native 3D footage vs. post converted 2D-3D footage (which I feel is blasphemy but I'm not the director).

In my opinion, post converted 3D will never look as good as native 3D because often times it ends up looking like a pop up book. There is an extra realism in the converted 2D-3D footage that is missing.

One of the most expensive post converted 2D-3D films was "Titanic" which costed about $15 million and looked very, very good in 3D but even that conversion wasn't perfect. Even James Cameron said it's more like 2.5D.

Saw this today, the composition and the camera movements in the long take part showed almost no sense of 3D in design, so even the conversion is strong, it won't become a great 3D experience. No to say the conversion is not so good, only provide an okay depth and separation, never went strong in 3D space.
The film itself is sort of repeat from Bi Gan's last film Kaili Blues, but this time he replaced those natural and floating feelings, what made Kaili Blues works, into weird and mechanical ways, so it's a quite uneven film for me. But still recommended anyway for those who are curious.
