Default MPEG-2 can be done right

I've seen some people upset with the idea of ID4 and others being MPEG-2. I will admit, I would prefer it to be AVC or VC-1, but I think MPEG-2 can be done right and look great.

For example, I am currently watching Layer Cake for the second time on Blu-Ray and I think it looks fantastic.

Practically everything from the first year of Lionsgate (T2, The Punisher) was MP2, but we can assume that was because they...just didn't know any better.

There are a lot of highly rated MPEG2 movies
Kingdom of Heaven and Crank come to mind right off the bat.

Kingdom of Heaven had a few scenes (darker ones) with noise, but many scenes made me gasp they looked so amazing.

Fox is the only studio I trust with an mpeg-2 codec. Even Disney can't claim that they are as good with it. And I have two Fox movies with misprint...Simpsons says mpeg-2, but is AVC, Cast Away says 2.35:1, but is 1.85:1.

Also Black Hawk Down is an excellent MPEG2 title.

ID4 is MPEG4 everywhere in the world. IMHO it's just a superb FOX, yet again, Press Release error. FOX is also the king of box errors on bluray. listing stuff that aren't there and wrong information. So until the movies are actually released, we can't possibly know in what codec they'll be.. LOL!

Just recently Amir himself admitted that at the highest bitrates MPEG-2 is slightly better than either AVC or VC-1. He was trashing AVC big time. Of course everything he says is spin of one kind or another.

Agreed - this was the first thing I thought when I read the news statement.

Total misprint.
