Default Angel Cop: Complete OVA (Discotek Media)

Release Date: August 28th 2018

Quote:
One of the more infamous releases over the decades in anime is that of the OVA series Angel Cop. It was originally released by Manga Entertainment back in the day with what’s labeled as an “utterly ridiculous and foul-mouthed” dub that’s been quoted heavily over the years and it’s also filled with a lot of violence. Geneon Entertainment did a simple DVD release ages ago as well and we know a proper native HD release won’t be produced in Japan as the materials simply aren’t there.

Discotek Media is planning to bring it out as an upscaled Blu-ray later this year that will have it with uncensored subtitles for the first time, the dub, and a new essay on the historical context of the work and other bonus material including an interview with the dub writer. Justin Sevakis, who is doing the work on the encoding, had this to say on it:

"Also, Angel Cop is an upscale, but really cleaned up nicely. Far more detail than has ever been visible. Better than DVD quality, a little blurry for BD. It didn’t look like a new HD transfer was ever going to happen."

An Upscale, but another 90s anime coming out from Discotek!

I think I’ll get this because of the effort put into it.

Same, Discotek typically does a good job and I plan on picking up a lot more of their releases.

Count me in, I loved this when I owned it on VHS.

I especially like the fact uncensored subtitles is mentioned.

Never seen this one, but high chance it's up my alley. Definitely want to support the 80s/90s anime madness!

Haven't been sold on any other of Discotek's "SD on BD" line, but this might be an upscale worth getting over the DVD, which they also announced. I'm just glad somebody's bringing this out and with uncensored subs, though the dub is entirely charming in its own right. "All right, butt-f***, that's enough speech-making for now."

Love me some Ichiro Itano animation and gore, just wish this could be in HD.

^ Their Fist of the North Star TV Series release (SD on BD) is pretty damn good.

Trouble is I'd already bought the DVD volumes, same goes for Samurai Pizza Cats, and I figured they couldn't upscale the video any better than a good BD player would do the DVDs, though I've never actually seen comparisons. Their SDBDs were a too-little-too-late cost- and shelf-saving measure in my case.

With Angel Cop, it sounds like they might be able to eke slightly more detail (and definitely better encoding) out of the master—either way it's a more reliable Blu-ray Disc in a slimmer case for hopefully around the same price.

I'm going to have to get this just for that dub:

"I've heard this gun's recoil is powerful enough to break my arm... oh well, here's goes nothing!"
(shoots gun)
"Holy sh-t! It broke my arm!"

Problem is that OVAs like these are probably never gonna get the true HD treatment so this may be the best we get.

"Megazone 23" needs a Western re-release ASAP.

At least Discotek is working with the best SD source available so it's going to be as good as it gets.

At least the ADV DVD was pretty good. Angel Cop is one of those that needs a massive upgrade though.

Good looking considering the source.

It looks like a flawless DVD more than a Blu-ray, but when considering that masters used are of less than ideal quality, it looks fine. If this were downscaled to SD and put at a maxed out Bitrate DVD, it would also be ideal.

Looks miles better than Viz's first "Sailor Moon" set.

Well anything is better than the manga ent dvd. They seriously had some awful releases. I already have it preordered and will be glad to have it.
