Default Sunshine and PiP

Anyone else a little underwhelmed with Sunshine's "PiP" experience? Is this what HD-DVD people have been raving about? I found it very lackluster.

I haven't seen the PiP on RE: Extinction, is it just as pointless?

I just felt that having the PiP on detracted from what is a truly fantastic film.

I agree, PiP was extremeley OVERATED. I myself was one to support PiP when people were saying how completely pointless it is, I was saying how cool it will be to Demo and how I couldnt wait to see the first Blu ray to have it. Now I agree with everyone: The only aspect that we should be worrying about is the best possible PQ/AQ PiP is not that important.

Now if PiP will eventually include ALL FEATURES: say you were in the movie and went to the Special Features - Theatrical Trailers and when you select it it will say PiP or Seperate Window - NOW that would be interesting and Great for Demo Purposes.

It's definitely a nice feature to have in the modern era of home movie entertainment. What were you expecting? Someone to come out of the PiP screen and touch you?

I honestly didn't know what to expect from it, but why have PiP while the movie is playing if it completely distracts you from the movie playing in the background? you might as well just watch the special feature separately later on. (which is an option in the menu)

I can agree with that, maybe the technology needs a little time to grow and evolve. Sunshine's PiP option is something I'll never use again.

.....watching the extras in pip during the feature would be distracting , yes. Pip to me is just more gimicry. Extras i find for the most part hugely overated. Had to laff though during one of the pop-up pip deals...talking about how the stove on the kitchen set had inductive cooking elements....does someone care about this???
Give me max birate hd & hires audio & they can axe 99% of all extras/gimics/'interactivity' imho.

The nice thing is that you can view it separately. While it is no real interactivity with PiP so far I would take it as a visual commentary while the movie is playing so if you like commentary while watch a movie this should be along the same lines, another application for PiP might be that the commenter can directly compare a visual drawing or prop while the movie is playing so you get a better idea of what they're talking about..

Exactly. This "feature" has been and is still worthless to me after having seen it. But at least HD-DVDers can't go on about it anymore.

Lol, yeah I chuckled at that one too. It was like "wow, I'm sure glad I had PiP on or I'd have missed that gem"

True, there is that. Not that we need to concern ourselves with them anymore though, they've recently become irrelevant.

It's just a gimmick. It's nice to have (I guess) but certainly not necessary.

I tried it, it is not that useful and funny. I couldn't find the difference
with the regular visual commentary or lets say regular pip function on a
regular blu-ray disc. as a bonus, it is ok to have it or not. doesn't matter.

Call me crazy, but I don't know how to turn on PIP. Lol. I just watch the movies. Maybe I missed it but is it a menu option on screen?

It's incredibly overrated for the stuff they're doing now, unless you get a lively and fun group commentary going.

There are future applications people have demo'd, but for now it's all fluff

I forget the name of the menu option, but it wasn't specifically called PiP. It's in the special features section about half way down.

For me PiP is just a Demo Feature that complements the Pop Up Menu. It's great for those moments when you have That Guy over and they bring up the "Whats the Big Difference with Blu ray, its just like DVD" argument. Thats when you pop in a Blu of our choice and say: LOOK AT THE PRESTINE 1080p Picture Quality Then they say: yeah it looks good but is that the only diference: then you show them the Interactive menus during Playback which is'nt a big deal to us but to the average Joe it's pretty impressive. Then you bring out the PiP feature and even if they dont think they would use it there is no way they wouldnt be impressed.

I mean I see how people who used to watch a movie with audio comentary would love this feature but I just dont know how those HD Fanboys use to brag about a feature that is hardly used.

All this being said there are some titles that this PiP would be pretty sweet and i'm sure we all know which ones i'm talking about the two we dont have YET - Batman Begins and Matrix (I cannot wait to see these titles removed off the shelf and replaced by Glorious Blu ray!!!)

The content in PIP on Sunshine is marginal, as is Extinction... War is even worse.

Give them time. There are great IME (In Movie Experience) features with PIP on HD DVD titles like 300, Matrix, Bourne Ultimatum, etc. They should be able to do the same with Blu-Ray, but experience doing it is currently lacking.

The BD titles with fake PIP weren't that bad...

Now, if you don't like movie production internals or commentary... this feature isn't for you. Just ignore it.

I have used the PIP on my cable box, which includes two tuners. I am not so enthusiastic about the PIP on movies to watch additional content.

The whole point of PIP & IME is that content can be created that references what is being viewed interactively. For example, on 300 they can show the scene before all the blue screen & digital processing and you can directly compare.

It's not supposed to be compared to watching another program, like you can do with a TV tuner PIP feature.
