Default Philips out @ Walmart - and is a rebadged Samsung?

That's what our friends at AVS are saying:

And ofcourse the HDDVD fanboys have all sorts of fud and misinformation to cast toward the philips way.

they are saying:

It's a rebadged samsung (False)

It doesn't support VC-1 (False)

I'm sure it support VC-1 since there are already some VC-1 BDs available but are you sure it's not a rebadged Sammy?

the DACS are different. 216 for the philips, 192 for the sammy.

that fact alone would not make them "rebadged"

It is a rebadged Sammy. I had guessed based on its similar model number (BDP9000), and that it has a multimedia card reader and disc drive is to the left, just like the Sammy. I got a PM from somebody at AVS (who, of course, can't be named publicly) saying I was right-- Sammy designed the unit, but it's running Philips' software.

There's been discussions about what really qualifies as a rebadge. From my understanding, the Philips is the same core equipment but as said above, is running the Philips software and has some slightly different audio to it in the DACs. I forget what the term used but it wasn't a rebadge. A rebadge would be what the RCA HD DVD player is where they put on a new faceplace and change the logo on the menu software.
