Default Sony Pictures Television's serving up content to DivX Certified players

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/09...ivx-certified/

Quote:
DivX announced Sony Pictures Television will be offering "high quality, secure" content for download-to-own to DivX Certified hardware (like the PlayStation 3 or DSM-330, but probably definitely not the Xbox 360). Little details like who will actually sell this content, what shows will be available (our fingers are crossed for syndicated Jeopardy HD episodes) and when aren't mentioned, but this is another step as it promotes itself as a platform for legitimate content distribution.

Update: We contacted DivX and confirmed the Xbox 360 is not a Divx Certified device and will not play this content, while DivX Connected devices like the DSM-330 will..

DIVX is GOOD PQ, but not HD PQ. I think this is a good move by Sony, and it will open up things like free, good quality movies and home video. I welcome it.

Relax, this is for movies in Divx, it's not even competing against Blu as the difference in quality is huge

I expect downloading movies to go badly. High speeds are needed... artifacting, glitches etc... might be attractive to movie renters but not collectors.

Exactly, I don't want to BUY every title that is released as some in this forum do. SOmetimes I just want to rent it, and this is a great alternative to netflix or blockbuster if its in 1080p.

THe downloads will be slower, but who cares. Once it downloads I can watch it.

but Microsoft is not 100% HD DVD because they even downsized their own HD DVD department, but Sony is 100% Blu and they go and do this, this will steer people to not buy Blu-rays and pay less to download a movie

I think it's good for Sony to match wits with the evil empire Microcrap.

M$ does not do it for the 360, as they sell Hi resolution for HiDef

What would be sweet is if they worked out a deal with Netflix like LG has. Netflix wants it to be an open platform, and this would be a slam dunk for both sides.

Netflix gets instant customer base with each ps3 where you have to buy the box if you want the LG.

It is just competition. Even though the technology is not really there yet, if the companies do nothing with digital downloads, they will never get there.
Right now, I highly doubt that this will take much away from BD sales at all.
On the other hand, if they put things up there that are not on BD (like tv shows), I might be willing to at least try it to see what the quality is like. I am very particular and have so far been very unimpressed with every download technology I've seen... but they have been getting better.

BTW... will these have surround sound?

I think it's a good thing, but it won't stop me from getting blu-rays at all.

I agree. No need to panic. They are just making sure their ducks are in a row to compete against the M$ machine down the road. I for one am glad to see them being pro-active.

Blu ray and downloads will co-exist very comfortably, with BR being the mass majority for sure.
