Default Avatar: The Last Airbender [Netflix Live-Action]

https://io9.gizmodo.com/avatar-the-l...lix-1829139229

Quote:
Hot on the heels of Netflix’s The Dragon Prince, from Avatar: The Last Airbender head writer Aaron Ehasz, the studio has just stealthily announced that Avatar is coming back in an all-new, live-action series.

Along with the first piece of concept art from the upcoming reboot, Netflix announced that The Last Airbender’s co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are both signed on to oversee the show, something they’ve been planning on for ages.

In a public statement, DiMartino and Konietzko expressed their excitement about the upcoming show and made a point of stating that this incarnation of the Aang’s story will star characters of color, unlike M. Night Shyamalan’s much-maligned 2010 The Last Airbender:

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”

This is crazy. I'm cautiously optimistic, especially after what original creator Michael Dante DiMartino has said:

Yes, this is really happening! I'm excited to be writing again with Bryan as we bring Aang's story into live-action, the way we had always envisioned it.

I might give it a look but I just don't see the point.

Original creators, cool. Still unnecessary.

I'd rather see a continuation with the next Avatar in the line after Korra, but still, this is intriguing (and would blow the stink off of the wretched Shyamalan movie ).

I’d rather have a Korra continuation or even a mid-equal, animated, adaptation of the comics.

Well..I mean..I'll give it a chance but this is certainly unexpected after the horror that was the live action film.

This line in particular from the Comicbook.com article gave me some hope: "I can confirm that the original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will be back to take on the live action. THIS IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN TRAINING FOR ALL THESE YEARS."

So, the animated series was just something they threw off to kill time before they could do it in live action? Seems kind of dismissive of the show's legacy.

Yeah. Bad idea. I would rather a new story with a new Avatar in the vain of Korra before this crap. At least I can enjoy The Dragon Prince for now. Gives me some good Avatar memories.

Doing a show like Avatar in live action would have hard back in 2005. Crappy CGI and Nick probably wouldn't have picked it up unless it were animated and affordable to produce. We've come a long way with what studios are able to do in terms of effects and whatnot.

But doesn't it seem pretty dismissive of a brilliant show with a large and loyal fanbase to essentially say, "What came before was just practice"? Especially moving it from animation (an art form that's always been ghettoized as "kid's stuff" in America) to live-action? I mean, I love the Avatar universe, and would love to see more of it, but what's the point of going over the same ground again, just in a different medium? ESPECIALLY after the abortion of the 2010 movie? Just saying, "We'll cast non-white leads now!" isn't really enough of an answer.

I do see what you mean, yeah. I could see if we had one or two seasons of the live action out already and it was receiving big time praise, but they're speaking too soon and shouldn't have used that wording. The live action is going to be a "reimagined take on Aang's story" and I wonder what that entails. Why not take this opportunity to adapt some of the comic material that came after the animation ended? I'm sure a lot of fans would like that.

There's absolutely no way this'll be worse than the film. I don't think that's humanly possible.

Great, I think it’ll work much better as a series than the movie did(n’t) than anything, it’ll give them the space to keep the tone and humour of the original animated series which I think for me was what the movie version lost and lacked the most.

Ehhh American remake of live action Death Note was terrible wish the Asian live action was available and Bleach live action also is terrible even though with Asian cast so much can not be done from Manga to Anime and now live action.

Not a big fan of Airbender but can Netflix really pull it off as a reboot because video game and anime live action are just terrible (only video game live action movie I approve is Silent Hill).
