These controversial Italian horror sub-genres got their start in the early 70s and carried on to the early 90s. Their heyday, spurred by the success of Lucio Fulci's Zombie and Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust, was the late 70s to mid 80s. These gratuitous, gory, often technically inept exploitation flicks are a guilty pleasure of mine (okay, I don't actually feel any guilt) and this is my attempt at compiling a comprehensive list of their Blu-ray releases.
Please let me know if you have suggestions for how the list can be improved. I wound up watching Hell Of The Living Dead/Virus/Zombie Creeping Flesh last night. Oh holy shit was that . . . interesting. If Bruno had trimmed some of the flab out of the middle and dialed back on the stock footage, that would have been an awesome (if terrible) zombie flick. As it was, it was watchable, entertaining, a bit boring in place, and overall fine enough.
It's the least shit Bruno Mattei film I've ever seen! (Also, did I not see it? I'm 90 years old, blind and senile sometimes) |

What are everyone's thoughts on Mountain of the Cannibal God (1978, Sergio Martino)? I watched it last month and was very, very torn on it. It's one of the more technically proficient Italian cannibal flicks I've seen, but the animal violence is so incredibly pervasive that it nearly ruined it for me. I'm almost (almost) tempted to pick up the Shameless version with the animal scenes removed. But then again, government censorship makes me pretty sick too.

It's up there. It's the UK release called Zombie Creeping Flesh:
![]() ![]() I initially had the US double feature with Rats from Blue Underground but removed it because I wasn't sure of its release status. Upon some brief research it seems legit, so I've added it back up there. |
