Hurray me! I got a new 4K TV on Black Friday, a Samsung NU7100 55". Last night, I got a new 4K player, a Sony UBP-X700. The old player, a Sony BDP-S580 was plugged into my pre-4K Denon receiver with a pre-4K HDMI unknown speed cable. The time between getting the new TV & getting the new 4K player, I have watched several Blu-ray movies & everything was fine.
All I did was unplug the old player (power, ethernet & HDMI) and plug in the new one (power cord was different but that is a non-issue). The new player does have 2 HDMI outputs, audio/video & audio only, so I plugged into the audio/video one. The problem I am having is the screen shows "no signal found" when trying to watch a movie. Watching TV is fine. My question is: do I need a "4K" HDMI cable from player to receiver & out to TV, or is it my receiver not "seeing" the 4K player because it's pre-4K technology? It shows in the player's instructions that if you don't have a 4K receiver, you are supposed to run a HDMI cable from the audio only output into the receiver AND a HDMI cable from the audio/video output straight into the TV. I don't know, please help! |

yes, you are going to have to use the two cable method, your going to have to plug the audio only cable into your receiver input for the player. then connect the other hdmi output (with a new premium certified cable) from the player into the tv directly. your receiver is HDMI 1.3, so, there won't be any getting around that. the cable that goes from the player's audio only output, that can be the existing cable you currently have as that port output is only 1.4 so your current cable is fine for that.
keep in mind your tv doesn't and won't support DV, make sure the player isn't set to DV and if it is, it should only give you HDR10, but, if there is a video issue, make sure you change the setting in the player to (Auto) remedy that. yes, between the player and the tv, you should be using new premium certified HDMI cables to remove that as an issue from the equation. keep us posted. Thank you solarrdadd for the quick reply! I'll go get a new HDMI cable right after work & let you know how things worked out. I'm not sure what DV & HDR10 are, but I'll set the player to Auto as you suggested just in case. Any suggestions on cable brand, good value wise? I'll probably be going to Best Buy, they are the closest. I think I would get better advice from you & not a "salesman".

With regard to that "no signal" thing -- you may find that this TV (if it acts anything like my 8000) is really, really buggy with splash screens, input naming errors, disappearing inputs, etc. This has been driving me nuts since I bought the set; I get that "No Signal" message on the blue Samsung splash screen ONLY on one input on my 8000, the Blu-ray Player HDMI input (number 2), which I was told is a malfunction in it of itself because all inputs should be showing it, but regardless, I only get the message on the Blu-ray Player input when I turn the connected player (a Cambridge Audio CXUHD) OFF and the TV sits for a few seconds. This is normal, though, because the panel isn't receiving a signal... "DV" stands for "Dolby Vision" and is one of the HDR (High Dynamic Range) formats for 4K content (discs, streaming). Samsung refuses to include this HDR format in their displays, instead opting to include "HDR10" (the BASE HDR standard that every HDR-equipped 4K signal comes in); the argument has been that Dolby Vision, because it uses "dynamic metadata" schemes to keep the HDR stream in a constant state of ideal ranges as a film or show progresses, is the HDR format of choice...I cannot say one way or the other because I haven't had a chance to sample any content in this format (heck...I haven't even purchased a UHD Blu-ray yet!). Samsung has also been pushing a format called "HDR10+," which is supposed to be a counterpart of Dolby Vision (our TVs have them -- I KNOW mine does, but I am not 100-percent certain the 7000 series does) that delivers this HDR metadata on a scene-by-scene basis, much like DV does. Not too many discs or streaming avenues offer this format, though, if I'm not mistaken. In your PLAYER, selecting AUTO for some kind of HDR control in the menus should allow it to determine that Dolby Vision isn't supported by your display (when you play a disc that has the format), and the player will then send the base HDR10 off the disc (which is how my setup will work once I get a UHD Blu-ray Disc to try). As has already been mentioned, though, you need to get a premium certified HDMI cable able to pass 4K resolution from the player to the Samsung for all of this to work, and you need to turn on "HDMI UHD COLOR" in the External Device Manager menu of the Samsung for the HDMI ports you're using for 4K content (that's an important one). Hope this helps. |

Thank you IntelliVolume! Your "no signal" problem is similar to my problem, but I've killed the power several times & the problem is still there even when trying all 3 inputs on the TV. I will get a better HDMI cable for the video & see what happens.

You probably don't need a new cable, but you can pick up a couple of Premium Certified ones from Monoprice. |

Every thing is now golden! I followed my marching orders & got a new 4K HDMI cable & ran it from the audio/video output from the player into the TV and my existing cable from the audio only output into the receiver & everything looks & sounds fantastic! The upgrade was definitely worth it! Thanks to everyone for their help!
