Widows and Lion producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman will produce the film alongside Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly (Lady Macbeth). The pic, which instantly becomes one of the hottest projects in the works out of the UK, was developed by See-Saw, the BFI and BBC Films.

Set in a UK coastal town in the 1820s, the drama will follow the unlikely romance between palaeontologist Mary Anning and a London woman of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid. Production is due to start in March.

Lee’s Sundance darling God’s Own Country, about the romance between two young male farmhands, was a critical hit and a box office breakout in the UK. The festival favorite picked up a slew of awards and also was BAFTA-nominated.

Oscar winner Winslet is in post on Avatar 2 and is filming the drama Blackbird. Three-time Oscar nominee Ronan is onscreen with Margot Robbie in Working Title and Universal’s Mary Queen of Scots.

Lots of mixed reactions on Film Twitter (aside from the gay film community of course).

Looks deeply derivative of Portrait of A Lady On Fire and Carol, and too uninteresting.

I don't think it will do much awards season wise, MAYBE a nomination for Winslet, but that's it.

My first thought was immediately Portrait of a Lady On Fire, but this still looks promising.

I didn't make it far into the trailer before stopping it. I know that I want to see this.
I love great acting and am sure this will have that.

I feel like the "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" comparisons are more on NEON's part (for the somewhat obvious reasons) than anything actually happening in the film. I remember when "God's Own Country" opened and a bunch of people kept comparing it to "Brokeback Mountain", despite it going in very different directions once the main couple become lovers, because of how the trailer was styled.

That said, can't wait to see this.

I had to think of this. But... aren't these films set in this century? Blue is Is the Warmest Colour and Room in Rome? Granted I don't really see many movies w/ lesbian romance or whatever. But I think those two fit the bill.

Honestly this should have been up my alley but that trailer just makes this look terrible. Now that we have reviews essentially confirming it, I’ll skip this, which sucks, because Gods Own Country is a masterpiece.
