Default Standard DVD that are almost Hi Def like

I was watching Star Wars III DVD with my son last night. Playing on my Samsung HD850 upconverting to 1080i and was kinda surprised that the PQ on that movie was "almost Hi Def like" wow the colors of that movie where just out there. I won't say Blu-ray like but I would say HD-DVD like
Anyone can suggest what other DVD movies that has great PQ?

you wouldn't think so if you had an actual HD version of the movie to compare to.

Well, I used to think Cars looked good upconverted. Then I got the Blu-Ray version and realized I was completely wrong.

Yeah I still haven't seen any SD DVDs that look similar to a Blu-Ray disc. Perhaps my PS3's upscaler just isn't that good, but SD DVDs always look blurry and have faded colors.

NONE. because an upscaler does not make an image HD

Its purpose is to keep the original SD image intact at a bigger RES. ie it keeps the upscaled image faithfull to the original without introducing more artifacts.

upscaling is a great marketing gimmick. Why it looks better to most is because the scaler in the TV is junk.

Default Standard DVD disc played on PS3

3:10 to Yuma looks stunning on PS3 which upscales DVD to near HD PQ.

PS3 dosent get close to HD with DVD. it does a good job of scaling a dvd image but dvd does not magically become HD.

unless your TV is accepting 1080p24 from bluray and not processing it in any form then your not seeing the best blu ray can be.

if your sending 1080i to the TV chances are it being cut to 540p and being upscaled.

its either that or your screen is too small to take real advantage of HD.

ive not seen 1 dvd come close to BD on my 1080p24 PJ @ 110ins diag screen.

but ive seen a few crap TVs do a poor job processing a HD signal. (not to mention most TVs lose resolution in motion, more so LCD tvs).

and by the way i compared blu ray with my old Denon A1XV a £2500 dvd upscaler.

Upscalers have a purpose but its not to make a dvd look HD, its to stop the dvd breaking into an holy mess at higher resolution. the rest is marketing twoddle

The two most recent Toy Story (1 & 2) DVDs look positivey "HD"... without the real 1080p HD version to compare against, of course...
