Default Corus Entertainment Creates A Canadian 24 Hour Channel For Adult Swim

Quote:
Corus Entertainment announced on Monday that it will launch the first-ever 24-hour Adult Swim channel in Canada on April 1. On that day, Corus' "ACTION" channel will rebrand as Adult Swim, and Adult Swim programming on Cartoon Network and the Teletoon at Night programming block will move to the new channel.

The announcement stated that the channel will feature new and returning animated comedies and live-action programming. While Corus did not list any anime properties, nor did it state anything about a Toonami programming block, the announcement did state, "Adult Swim in Canada will mirror the programming and brand voice of the acclaimed channel in the U.S., delivering audiences new series day and date with the U.S. year-round."

The channel will be available for a two-month free preview from April 1 to May 31. Viewers can also watch full episodes On Demand for free until January 2020.

Well it’s big news if it happens. I know you don’t feel that way because you can’t stand Dubbed Anime, but for many others news like this is huge.

It’s not because I dislike dubs, but rather because they have no word on it Toonami is part of it.

That would be super cool if we had some more Toonami kind of programming blocks on Adult Swim.

Probably Something Else Entirely, Or Maybe Isn’t But It’s Worth Noting

Quote:
Adult Swim and Crunchyroll announced a new programming partnership and expanded distribution deal on Tuesday. Crunchyroll will now be a "premiere content partner" for Adult Swim's Toonami programming block, which airs on Saturday nights. The companies will collaborate on licensed content, co-productions, and distribution opportunities.

Crunchyroll general manager Joanne Waage noted that the company's "mission is to grow anime globally," and the Adult Swim partnership will help further that goal because "Toonami has been incredibly influential in the growth of anime here in the U.S." The announcement also stated that Adult Swim reaches about 94 million households, and Crunchyroll has 45 million registered users with 2 million streaming subscribers.

WarnerMedia, the new content company created after AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner last June, announced a reorganization of its divisions earlier this month that will bring many of its subsidiaries and brands — including Otter Media (Ellation, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, VRV), Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Boomerang — into a single "Global Kids & Young Adults" unit.

Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara will have oversight of all WarnerMedia-licensed consumer products in the company's effort to launch an "integrated, global approach to all our kids and animation businesses." Tsujihara stated that there will be chance for WarnerMedia brands to collaborate, with opportunities to release new animated TV and digital projects in coordination with Warner Animation Group features.

Crunchyroll and Adult Swim announced in November that they are partnering with Alcon Entertainment to produce an anime series based on Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the 1982 Blade Runner film. The series, titled Blade Runner — Black Lotus, will have 13 episodes. Adult Swim will have worldwide distribution rights to an English-dubbed version outside of Asia, and will air it in the United States on its Toonami block. Crunchyroll will stream the anime worldwide.

I looked at this week's programming schedule for the new Canadian Adult Swim channel. I don't see any anime on it.

Well apparently they did get the April Fools Machu Picchu Anime-inspired show that was also on the U.S. Adult Swim.

But I wouldn’t give up on it having Anime just yet if I was in Canada. The U.S. Adult Swim didn’t have Anime at first either. It wasn’t until they started showing Cowboy Bebop and then later on dedicating Saturday nights for Anime with the Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Pilot Candidate, Gundam 0083, Outlaw Star and ended with Tenchi Muyo.

Cowboy Bebop's first two episodes actually were a part of the initial Adult Swim U.S. broadcast on Sept. 2nd, 2001.

Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried grabbing some anime for the Adult Swim Canada channel (at the very least, perhaps FLCL since Adult Swim helped fund Seasons 2 and 3?). There's a lot of time to fill and most Adult Swim series don't have enough episodes to run 7 days a week (some can't even air in the daytime hours due to Canada's watershed rules). Anime would definitely help fill up some of those timeslots.
