Default Cannibal Apocalypse coming from Kino this summer!

Diving through the assorted Video Nasties, I have come to the conclusion that I generally don't like the Cannibal flicks. I am, however, thrilled that Cannibal Apocalypse is making it's way to Blu from Kino!

First, this isn't your typical animal cruelty filled Green Hell. Aside from a scene or two in 'Nam, this is all urban. If I were comparing the affliction, I'd say more a zombie flick by way of Cronenberg's Rabid.

And it's really, really good - well, for an 80's cheesy Italian horror flick. Everyone on the Video Nasty Project loved the hell out of it!

Special Features and Technical Specs:
* NEW 4K RESTORATION OF THE UNRATED UNCUT VERSION OF THE FILM
* NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Tim Lucas
* Cannibal Apocalypse Redux: Documentary Featuring John Saxon, John Morghen (Giovanni Lombardo Radice) and director Antonio Margheriti
* Apocalypse in the Streets A Video Tour of Filming Locations
* European Theatrical Trailer
* Japanese Teaser
* Alternate Title Opening Sequence
* Reversible Art
* Optional English Subtitles

Hours before this was announced, I was looking at the overprized OOP dvds on ebay.

Hmm.. I've hated the cannibal films I've seen. Couldn't even finish Sacrifice! Maybe I need to look into this one though...

Heh, yeah I'm not really into cannibal movies either. But this looks like it could be pretty fun -- cheesy as all get out, but fun.

Plus, it's got John Saxon, always a plus. And Elizabeth Turner was a total babe.

How was Summer determined to be the release time frame? I don't see a reference to Summer anywhere. Actually, all Kino said was "be patient" in response to someone who asked about the movie. I'm in no particular rush for this one tbh. Not one of the best cannibal flicks out there.

It's actually on the front page of this site

Kino Lorber have confirmed that they are preparing a Blu-ray release of Antonio Margheriti's film Cannibal Apocalypse (1980), starring John Saxon, Elizabeth Turner, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Cinzia De Carolis, and Ramiro Oliveros. The release is expected to arrive on the market later this summer.

Synopsis: It starts off in Vietnam where Norman Hopper gets bitten by P.O.W. Charlie Bukowski who has been infected with some sort of cannibal virus. A few decades later in Atlanta, Georgia, Hopper wakes up from a nightmare flashback of what actually happened back in 'Nam. Hopper then receives a call from Bukowski asking him if he wants to go out for a drink but Hopper refuses remembering the incident in 'Nam. Bukowski has turned into a cannibal and is soon on the run after biting into a woman's neck. He barricades himself in a department store and shoots some folks with a shotgun. The cannibal virus spreads and soon Hopper joins veterans Bukowski and Tom Thompson along with some others to wreak some havoc... 4K REMASTER.

4K remaster!?! First ever for a cannibal flick? I don't remember if Grindhouse Releasing scanned their two releases in 4K. Maybe 2K? Anyway, great news even if I'm still not terribly excited by the film itself.

Ferox is 2K and Holocaust, I can only find info that it's a "HD restoration." Obviously such a shame that Holocaust didn't get the treatment it deserves (the Austrian release is the best, but a new scan is needed).

For those mentioning that they aren't interested in cannibal flicks, this one is definitely different than the others. It takes place on US soil, and has a different vibe. Rather than traveling to a remote village and being terrorized, soldiers contract cannibalism and come back to America. They are dealing with Vietnam PTSD and cannibalism. There aren't any animals harmed if I remember correctly. It's definitely different from the rest of the pack.

A rat was set on fire during the sewer/flamethrower scene.

From the BBFC:

A compulsory cut was required to remove sight of animal cruelty (in this case, a rat being set on fire with a flamethrower) in accordance with BBFC Policy. An uncut classification was not available.

Thanks for correcting me on that. Everyone should have the information upfront before blind buying or buying after a long time from viewing (like me). There isn't anything on the level of Cannibal Holocaust, correct? Like long drawn out scenes? I do count all animal cruelty equally.

Indeed. Although, I do respect all the work Grindhouse did with they release, but when it comes to PQ, I prefer Austrian all the way. Must buy for me one of these days, till then, I'll stick with Grindhouse of course.

About the 4K status of 'Apocalypse' the main question is: what is the source for that? Pointless to say that if there's no OCN involved, that doesn't bring much for the table, especially from someone like Kino.

Edit. Typo

just watched my DVD of this a couple of weeks back. not a bad movie but not one i'm in a hurry to upgrade either. i liked John saxon in this one. not up to the usual Italian gore standards though it has a couple of good kills.

For me, as I don't own this on DVD at all, it brings everything to the table.

Rats Night Of Terror is uncut in the UK and there's loads of rat-burning in that one... the BBFC is completely inconsistent

I'm more shocked that there were assets to remaster. I thought the original negatives were long lost.

This is me holding out hope that someday we'll get blu ray of Fight For Your Life.

A 4K remaster of Cannibal Apocalypse on blu-ray, what a truly great age we live in.
