Default Center Speaker Recommendations

I have an old center speaker that I bought in 99 and it's about 9 inches high. Since going from my old Sony HS61-30 rear projection set where the center speaker rode on top of the set, my Mits 57732 is about 2 inches wide at the top and won't support it. With the stand I purchased for it and two shelves it has, the center speaker eats up the whole top shelf for all intents and purposes.

The bottom shelf is filled with my Onkyo 605 and my Sony 400 disc SD player. My satellite box now sits angled on top of the SD player and looks like crap. So I want a Slimmer model center speaker that I can use to stack the sat box with. I have about 5 inches to play with to make this work.

Any recommendations from anyone?

I don't know about performance or anything, but the Bose centerchannel is not too deep, if I remember correctly. It is pretty wide, though.

Ideally you need to have the center channel not only from the same brand as your front left / right, but also from the same series of speakers to ensure the center channel is tonally matched to your other main speakers.

I currently have the matching center and towers. The only thing I've been able to find thin enough is a couple of cheaper center channels that wouldn't match. What I have now is better than what I can buy to fill the bill. Well, so much for the easy way out. I guess I'll just go and buy a bigger stand.

Any one have any good idea what to do with an old stand?

I'm lusting after the B&W HTM1D, but it's the size of a small car and it's not for everyone.

Five inches is the physical height, not the speaker size. This is ten inches high.

Others who have been having this issue have just been putting black shelves just above the TV to place the center speak on. Cheaper than getting a new center speaker or trying to match speakers up.

Not for everyone? Not for people who don't want to spend $9,000 for a center. I don't even want to know how much are the matching fronts for it.

For my original theater I had a shop fabricate a steel "L" bracket, painted it black, and mounted it on the wall above the TV ... worked great!

That B and W center is nice but i've heard far far better. Remember 80% of your movie is coming from your center channel so its definitely worth it for movie or television viewing. I'd suggest using your existing center channel and figuring out how to mount it above your new TV.

I used one of these when I had a JVC DILA rear projection.

I have two home theater rigs; one is all Definitive Technology Mythos speakers, and they make a terrific, small center channel unit.

Take a look, see if it will work for you. Astounding sound in a mid-sized room.

This is what I had to do with my setup. I have a Sony SXRD and you can't put anything on top of that set (like you could with older RPTV sets). I have a Klipsch RC64 center speaker and it wouldn't fit on the bottom shelf of my rack, so I bought black shelves, put them on the wall behind the tv, and it works fine. Just have to adjust your system a bit to compensate for the distance, but it is easy to do.
