Default Nightmare Alley (2021)

Quote:
Bradley Cooper is in early talks to star in Guillermo del Toro and Fox Searchlight’s adaptation of “Nightmare Alley.”

Sources say Cooper recently received an offer and while it’s currently unclear if a deal will close, sources indicate both sides have engaged in talks. Cooper would take the place of Leonardo DiCaprio, who ended up passing on the project after a deal could not be reached.

Del Toro will direct the pic and co-wrote the script with Kim Morgan. “Nightmare Alley” is being produced and financed by del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment, with Fox Searchlight acquiring worldwide distribution rights to the film.

While Fox made a “Nightmare Alley” movie in 1947, this film will be based moreso on the William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same name. The 1947 movie starred Tyrone Power as an ambitious young con-man who teams up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the tables on him, out-manipulating the manipulator. [SOURCE]

Wow! Not 100% sure del Toro is the right fit for this, but DiCaprio's involvement has me excited.

Del Toro has the power to cast whoever he wants, and yet they still won’t let him cast an actor from his country. There are plenty of Latinos out there that could do the job as good as Leo.

Has it ever occur to you that DiCaprio wants to work with Del Toro or vice versa?

Another high-profile director to cross off DiCaprio's list, if this ends up happening.

And Del Toro has the right to say “I don’t need another white lead. I haven’t had a Latino lead since Pan’s Labyrinth”.

This movie sounds like it could be an interesting one and an interesting team up but all you care about is race above skill set.

It’s not like a studio like Fox would let him cast anyone that isn’t white/semi-known.

Y’know, Jordan Peele got crap for saying he’ll stick with black leads but all he wants is to cast people he identifies with. That’s obviously working out well for him. Del Toro’s best films are the ones he gets to make in his own way, in his own language, with people who look like him. That’s not forced diversity.

But, you are basically asking for forced diversity. Also, what makes you think he doesn't get to make films his own way?

OMG who the f*** cares about the race of the lead actor? I doubt DiCaprio was imposed on Del Toro, as the latter is a recent Oscar winner and a respected auteur, so the most likely reason is that he wants to work with DiCaprio - who happens to be the biggest movie star in the planet and a pretty respected actor to boot. Although he is politically conscious, Del Toro doesn't seem to be an extremist who would veto people based on the color of their skin.

Can we please not further derail this thread with this race-baiting shit? It has nothing do with the movie.

Poya brings this up with damn near every movie as it's the only thing that should matter.
What should matter is that we're getting a team up of DiCaprio and Del Toro.

I'm in favor of letting directors work with whatever actors they desire to work with, and vice versa. No way are del Toro and DiCaprio being "forced" to collaborate - neither man would be doing this if they didn't want to.

I also find "people who look like him" funny. As if del Toro doesn't look as European as anyone possibly can?

As for the film, this is interesting in that it's not what I would expect from del Toro. No supernatural element, and no creatures!

Sometimes it's good when a filmmaker gets out of their "comfort zone" and tries something new (like Tim Burton with Big Eyes ).

DiCaprio ensures del Toro gets a big budget for the film he wants to make. An unknown in the lead will get him a low budget. It's that simple.

Oh yeah, I don't disagree with that at all. Filmmakers (and authors, musicians - creative people in general) experimenting and trying new things is always a positive. For obvious reasons, this can be more creatively stimulating and gratifying for them than just rehashing the same formula over and over, sometimes it's even what they need to keep going.

I was just taken aback, is all. But I'm looking forward to see what he'll do with something different from what he usually does.
