Default Directors that are good but have fallen off the map

What got me thinking about this thread is I just bought Wolfgang Petersen's Troy well not a great movie I think it is good. Between 1981 and 2000 Wolfgang Petersen was killing it. He released Das Boot (1981) (my third favorite movie of all time) The NeverEnding Story (1984) Enemy Mine (1985) (not that great) Das Boot (TV Mini-Series) (3 episodes)- Part 1 (1985) - Part 2 (1986) - Part 3 (1987) (with added footage), Shattered (1991) (haven't heard of it), In the Line of Fire (1993) Outbreak (1995), Air Force One (1997) The Perfect Storm (2000), then he did Troy (2004) the remake of Poseidon (2006) since then he's only made Four Against the Bank (2016) and that's the last film he's made.

I think Troy (director's cut) is a masterpiece.

Paul Verhoeven:
He made 3 hits in the US, then 2 flops and 1 box office disappointment.
After that he made the great Black Book and now he's doing french movies.

what I wouldn't give for a Arnie/Verhoeven return. King Conan or something

Barry Levinson
Rob Reiner
Terrence Malick

Robert Zemeckis has always been fairly consistent in terms of quality, but hasn't had a box office hit in forever.

Yeah.

George Lucas. Say what you will about him as a writer, but he's always been a solid director and I'd love to see him make something new.

John McTiernan

One of the greatest action directors of the last 30 years. Too bad he torpedoed his own career by hiring a P.I. to wiretap one of his former producers. That sort of thing is, for some reason, frowned upon...

Elle was released just three years ago and was one of the most acclaimed and discussed films of its year, to say nothing of his upcoming and much buzzed-about Benedetta. Not sure how that qualifies Verhoeven as "having fallen off the map".

Maybe fallen off the map = not making movies for American studios?

Elle got Isabelle Huppert an Oscar nomination too!

I really like Verhoeven's Tricked as well, very funny black comedy. Shame there isn't an English friendly Blu-ray

Anyway, I think the most flagrant example is Roland Joffé.

Two back-to-back triumphs with The Killing Fields and The Mission, way back in the mid-1980s... Then absolutely no critical or box-office hits, like, ever again.

Are we talking critical or box office hits? Or are we talking about no more work being put out? If it's the later than Rob Riner doesn't belong on that list.

Phil Alden Robinson
John Mctiernan
Joe Johnston
Kevin Costner(as a director)

Funnily enough, Peter Jackson is starting to edge into this territory. Five years since The Hobbit trilogy wrapped up, and no new feature film in active development. I wonder if the tragic early loss of Andrew Lesnie has contributed to him stepping away.

Jackson directed They Shall Not Grow Old and is working on a Beatles documentary. Unless you don’t count documentaries as real projects. But it seems like he wants to focus on documentaries. I hope he gets around to finishing the restoration on all his films before Lord of The Rings!

Jan de Bont - his last two films were Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life (2003), which sucked and The Haunting (1999) which really sucked.

Wait is this about directors whose careers people don’t like anymore or is it about directors who haven’t made any films recently?

Because I think Tarantino’s career went downhill after Basterds, but he just released a movie.

Or I really want to see Carpenter make a new movie again.
