Default Gene Kelly on Blu-ray

In honour of the birthday of one of my favourite stars of Hollywood's Golden Age, I'm starting a thread for Gene Kelly movies on blu-ray. At this point, I'm going to focus on Region A blu-ray releases, however, feel free to discuss whatever movies or releases you like

SIGNIFICANT LEAD OR SUPPORTING ROLES

CAMEOS, GUEST APPEARANCES, DIRECTOR ONLY

Here in the UK many years back, the BBC used to show lots of the classic MGM musicals from the 1940's, and another Gene Kelly film I remember them showing quite often was Thousands Cheer. The film had a huge cast with lots of familiar faces from that era. A blu-ray would be very welcome.

A great talent and one of the most famous alumnus from Carnegie Mellon here in Pittsburgh. I prefer Astaire’s dancing and film presence over Kelly’s...Gene’s smile seems painted on somehow...Apples and oranges though...Like Beatles vs. Stones...

Ziegfeld Follies coming to blu-ray from Warner Archive.

Features the famous "Babbitt and the Bromide" number with Gene and Fred Astaire!

Fred was more graceful and elegant. Gene was aggressive and athletic.

They are two very different dancers and I prefer Fred but they are both great.

I prefer The Beatles over The Stones too.

Would love to see a bluray release of Viva Knievel someday. Not Genes best work, but it is a great 70's movie.

Hopefully we are getting Take Me Out To The Ball Game in June also. If not June I bet it's coming soon, it looks Amazing on HBO Max.

Great thread! One of my favorites. Hopefully Tunnel of Love with Doris Day gets released on Blu-ray which he directed.

Just FYI, the more recent UK release of COVER GIRL uses a 4K restoration that's not on the OOP US disc, so it's not worth tracking the US disc down for vast sums.

The UK disc plays on many American players (like Panasonic) with the STOP, TOP MENU, TOP MENU trick.

Does that trick work on LG 4k players? I spent 60 bucks on the twilight blu-ray and than later found out the UK version was a better transfer. I still don't have a region free player though.

I found an old Panasonic blu-ray player i had stored away. I tried the trick out on a UK bluray I got that the special features DVD disc is B locked. It did not work, does it only work for some disc?

The region coding of DVDs and BDs is different. The DVD, if it's locked, would be Region 2-locked, not Region B-locked.

UK DVDs are also PAL, so that's an entirely separate issue that American players also can't handle.

Unfortunately this trick only works on overseas 1080p BDs that are region locked (and not even all of them, I'd say about 75% of them), because they're neither NTSC nor PAL.

The trick won't work on most British television BDs, because they're 1080i/50, which is (to simplify things quite a bit) the HD method of running 25fps PAL content.

US DVD players and BD players are intentionally designed to be unable to play PAL content, unfortunately. Only a tiny few have the ability to read PAL.

It depends on the label/studio (all of my region locked Arrow, BFI, Carlotta, Eureka, Indicator, and Koch Media discs have worked on my Panasonic player). DVDs won't work only Blus.

Okay that's why the DVD didn't work. thanks for the help guys. I Guess i'll just take a gamble and buy the Eureka blu-ray to see if it works. If it doesn't work it will just give me motivation to save up for a region free player finally.

You can get it for $20 with free shipping from a vendor at Amazon US:

https://www.amazon.com/Masters-Cinem...0781322&sr=8-1

I've only ever bought Panasonic DVD and BD players, I trust them, it sounds like the STOP, TOP MENU, TOP MENU trick may be exclusive to them, I honestly don't know.

The disc is definitely Region B-locked. I got the warning screen when I put it in, before hitting STOP.
