Default Border Books Drops HD-DVD

I just stopped in my local Border's Books tonight to pick up a couple of books that came out today and always check out there blu and hd-dvd set. The section started as a 50-50 set, then at the beginning of December went to a 75-25 set in favor of blu. Well, tonight all of the hd-dvd is gone and the entire set is blu. I asked the manager what happened (thought maybe the moved the titles) and she said they discontinued the hd-dvd's, was not selling. I asked if this was just her store or a corporate decision, she said it came down from Corporate over the weekend. They boxed up the product and are sending it to a clearing house.

Another indication that HD DVD is on its way out. I really like how all those HD DVD supporter say HD DVD isn't going anywhere. Well, I could have told them that, it really isn't going anywhere at all (well maybe down). Meanwhile the numbers for Blu-ray keep going up and up...

Well, what do you know ... a retailer actually being smart, decisive and proactive. Most American retailers seem to no longer have the ability to "turn on a dime", glad to see some are still left.

Nice.
With the news of Toshiba acting like a little @#% (the most anti-consumer decision a company can make), I'm glad retailers are starting to take the bull by the horns.

Borders carries HDM?

Eh, I'll still pass - their SALE prices on SDVDs are still more than the regular prices at some stores. I cannot imagine what their prices for BD discs are.

Good news on the Blu side, though!

This could turn into a Blockbuster vs. NetFlix thing... NetFlix shows such a high number of HD-DUD renters but I think that's because they're the only ones renting.

With Borders dropping HD-DUD the few buyers will now be pushed to Wal-Mart, Target, etc. Those numbers could go up a bit. Then again, if such few people were actually BUYING from Borders there might not be that many folks moving!

Either way it's good news. The retail lynch-pin is Wal-Mart. The moment we get word that they are dropping HD-DUD then it's time to pop the cork on a fine bottle and celebrate.

Just make sure there aren't any dogs around. That could get painful.

Where are the people that want to pay full msrp for their HD-DVDs going to go now? I am surprised they actually sell enough Blu ray to continue stocking them - Hell, I am surprised they sell anything for what they charge.
