Comicbook.com is saying this is going to be an original story. Like, that's cool and all, but I'm kinda bummed. I thought from the title that this may have been an adaptation of Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" the canonical end of the Silver Age Superman. That would've been cool to see get adapted.

After Superman: Red Son and the purported Long Halloween adaptation, this is my most anticipated of the upcoming DCAU slate. Mainly because it's original. A lot of these DCAU movies buckle under the weight of trying to adapt an arc that they simply can't in the time they're allotted, so an original story should benefit.

1) Every Alan Moore adaptation, with the lone exception of the JLU episode For The Man Who Has Everything, has sucked 2) Alan Moore doesn't like people to adapt his work 3) Alan Moore doesn't like people who adapt his work |

Alan Moore hates a ton of his old work and he hates you for liking it, so it's a bit of a losing battle either way with him.

But adaptations of his work have been so uniformly awful that I'm starting to wonder if Hollywood is merely incompetent or if Moore actually does have some wizardly power to curse people who try to adapt his works. Only reason I can think of that it didn't work for the JLU episode is that he's actually worked with Bruce Timm |

Because those are the ones that sell. Thinking outside of the box doesn't always pay off for them. Justice League: Gods and Monsters, which I thought was very good and was very different, completely flopped in sales. They weren't even going to make any more Wonder Woman films because the sales of that 2009 Wonder Woman film didn't satisfy Warners. They only changed their mind because of the Gal Gadot movie |

Dude, it wasn't until 2018 and 2019 that we got a Superman and Wonder Woman animated movies again. Till then, it was nothing but Batman and Justice League.

It’s not original when we’ve already seen Superman’s origin way too many times.

Looks kind of old school in design. Which is not so much a bad thing. The design of Superman (or should I say Superboy) reminds me a bit of the old Filmation cartoons of the 60s, but with some added dimension. The overall look is clean and conservative, and the colors are cool and subdued, unlike the exaggerated and bright style of most anime. As I've said before, I would still need to see it in motion to better assess it, but I think this is a nice departure aesthetically from what we've previously gotten. I can't say it looks better or worse, but it's certainly different and somewhat refreshing of a change. Curious if this is just going to be a one time look or if the design choice will become the new template for multiple features within a new string of continuity.

I'm shocked this actually looks significantly different from their usual output. I'm actually excited for once.
And now to get my hopes up, only for them to be dashed by some nonsense shocking story change to everything we know about characters like in Red Son or Killing Joke. |

People seem to use the word "anime" interchangeably now with "animation." But if we're talking anime, based on typical anime designs and style... no this is NOT anime. If we're talking anime based on place of production... does that really matter anymore? Most animation, even if American in origin, is outsourced to either Japan or Korean studios anyway. I'm not sure that would necessarily make it anime. In my opinion, this is far removed from something that would be considered anime. |
