Superman: Red Son (2020)

[Show spoiler]

Comic Book Art

Quote:
An animated movie based on the Elseworlds tale Superman: Red Son is on the way. It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con and Warner Bros. is developing a feature for a 2020 home release.

DC broke the news during the world premiere of Batman: HUSH at SDCC. Red Son will kick off an entire slate of DC Animated features scheduled for next year. These include Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which is an original story, and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War — a sequel to the 2017 release Justice League Dark.

Superman: Red Son is a three-part storyline first published in 2003. Written by Mark Millar and the winner of an Eisner Award, it explores the idea of Kal-El’s craft landing in the Soviet Union as opposed to Kansas. He ends up being raised in the USSR during the height of the Cold War and the plot spans his life in an alternate reality from 1953 to 2001.

Our first look at the film, as well as the official cast announcement!

Quote:
Back in July, DC Animation announced Superman: Red Son, the celebrated graphic novel by Mark Millar and Dave Johnson, is their next big adaptation. The full voice cast was revealed this past week.

Leading the pack is Jason Isaacs as the Soviet-raised Man of Steel whose ship landed in the USSR in the 1950s — the height of the Cold War — instead of Smallville, Kansas. An Elseworlds tale, Red Son has alternate depictions of several Superman and DC characters as well as historical figures.

Playing Lex Luthor is Diedrich Bader, former star of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Amy Acker will voice Lois Lane and Phil LaMarr reprises his role as John Stewart Green Lantern.

Other veterans of DC material are coming in from other places. Phil Morris takes a break from the Doom Patrol and Silas Stone to voice James Olsen. Roger Craig Smith (Batman: Arkham Origins) jumps from the video game realm to animated feature film as Red Son’s Batman.

Vanessa Marshall, Sasha Roiz, William Salyers, Jim Meskimen, Travis Willingham, and Winter Ave Zoli round out the rest of the cast as Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan, Josef Stalin, John F. Kennedy, Superior Man, and Svetlana, respectively.

The cast has one more name who deserves a special mention. As part of Superman: Red Son, prolific actor and songwriter Paul Williams marks his return to DC Animation after a two-decade absence. From 1992 to 1998, Williams supplied the voice of The Penguin in Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Superman Adventures. His last outing as Oswald was in the multiplayer game DC Universe Online.

Williams, far from a simple voice actor, has been well-known as a songwriter for many years. He wrote number-one songs for Barbara Streisand, Three Dog Night, and The Carpenters, and is also the writer of quite a few catchy themes for TV shows that include The Love Boat.

He’s appeared in small roles for countless films over the years, most recently playing a fancy gun dealer in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver.

In 1974, Williams combined his acting and musical talent for Brian De Palma’s rock opera Phantom of the Paradise. Writing the musical score, he also played the Faustian villain Swan. Much like Penguin who owns and operates The Iceberg Lounge, the equally avian-themed Swan was the impresario behind the title musical venue — The Paradise.

Williams will play a different kind of rogue in Red Son — that being Brainiac. First brought to the small screen in Superman: The Animated Series and played by Corey Burton, Brainiac was revamped as a Kryptonian AI who duped all but Jor-El into ignoring signs of Krypton’s destruction.

Lance Henriksen took over for Burton as Brainiac in a 2006 standalone feature, Brainiac Attacks, that has no connection to animated-series continuity. Later incarnations such as Superman: Unbound brought Brainiac (John Noble) back to his roots as The Collector of Worlds.

In the Red Son graphic novel, Brainiac collaborates with Lex Luthor to shrink a Soviet city which wound up being Stalingrad. Superman eventually takes them down and seizes Brainiac’s central processor. While he manages to retrieve Stalingrad, Superman can’t restore it and its people back to normal size; a sole failure in his life that brings him massive guilt.

If this is beat for beat the Brainiac Paul Williams plays or if his part gets expanded is not clear yet. Find out when Superman: Red Son comes out on all major formats in early 2020, likely January.

Presumably an extended DC Showcase short with other shorts as extras, much like Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam.

The comic was pretty good; hopefully the animated version does it justice.

The comic was relatively short, so hopefully they don't have to cut much out.

I rented Wonder Woman: Bloodlines and watched the sneak peek of Red Son, and I've got to say, it looks awesome!

Only difference so far is that Superman 2 doesn't really appear disfigured and is now called Superior Man instead. Eh, I'm okay with that.

Here's hoping all the swear words aren't forced, like a lot of these PG-13 animated films do.

Most DC animated films don't force swears to my knowledge (and I've seen a good chunk of them). Though I'm more worried about Justice League Dark Apokolips War on this part, as it was partly R for its language (meaning several f bombs). The other R rated DC Animated movies only used 1 f bomb (some even had no f bombs at all), so hopefully it isn't forced in that film.

It certainly felt forced in Hush.
