It will have to come from fresh/new 4k scans, so it will probably look a lot better this time around.

I don't have the BTTFs on Blu-ray; what was wrong with them?

I did not see anything wrong with Back to the Future. But I do think they need to remaster Jurassic Park.

Mainly a lot of DNR and the like. I've seen worse, but they could use a fix-up.

I wouldn't expect 4K versions, at least on disc, until the 35th anniversary of the original, which would be 2020.

Both franchises were from old HD scans with multiple source problems. BTTF looks horribly processed IMHO... I'm not alone in that sentiment.

These need major 4k restorations/overhauls.

Was the original remastering done at 4K by Universal? If so, then they may just use that for UHD, as disappointing as that may seem.

No. There was no 4k re-scanning used for the current Blu-ray. It was an older HD master from years before doctored up with a bunch of add on processing.

That isn't to say that Universal couldn't have created new 4k restorations in the meantime. But... this is Universal we're talking about.

John Carpenter's The Thing is being re-released by Shout! and it's only sporting a new 2k scan.

Ah ok. That is disappointing. Hopefully they will create a new 4k restoration at some point if they haven't already, without all the EE and DNR. Fingers crossed.

All three parts on BD looks OK, they arnt perfect but I've seen much worse transfers. Picture has this overprocessed look because of excessive edge enchancement and new release could improve picture quality. First BTTF on HDTV looks better IMO (without these picture manipulations), but for UHD format they would had to make new master anyway.

On my js9500, the back to the future blu rays look pretty good. I use an oppo 103d with darbee turned on to address an older film. I'd be down for an updated version though.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has absolutely no interest in doing a 4K transfer or higher scan of any of the BTTF films. I can tell you this with definitive knowledge and confirmation from people heavily involved with the BTTF franchise.

So, it would be up to Spielberg, Gale, and Zemeckis to get a 4k restoration created? Is that the short and the tall of it?

If this is true, then Comcast really is shit.

They might not now. Maybe in a few years when the format is more established and it's time for a new anniversary they will though.

I mean, come on, The Breakfast Club got a 4K restoration. Why not Back to the Future?
