Default What happened to faster DVD releases?

A year or two ago it was said that movie companys were going to start releasing DVDS about 2-4 weeks after their theater releases, starting with Disney and Buena Vista. So what happened? Is that dead now?

bwaaaah!? that will never ever happen.Don't know where you heard that. I think mainly because people would plain out not go to the theatres any more and say "I'll just get it in 3 weeks on DVD". Which would be a multi million dollar mistake

They couldnt lose...Lets just say for example..Gone Baby Gone...All the previews showed it looked like a good movie, if I decided to wait for it on DVD I would be paying a guaranteed 17-20 on DVD and 25-30 on Blu Ray, rather than the 8.50 at the movie theaters and if I dont like it I dont buy it, which loses them 10-15 dollars, and im not the only one

Yeah, I remember hearing that. That was when everyone was having a doom and gloom outlook on theaters because no one was going to watch movies at them, but the problem was not theaters, which IMO have always sucked, it was that there were no good movies out at the time that bring people to theaters. The Queen does not bring people out to the theaters but movies like Transformers does.

Over the last several years the average time to DVD has gone down.

I sure as hell wouldn't see anything in theaters if I could get it on disc in a month or less. Hell, I'd probably be more likely to just pick movies up at that point... going to the theater is not a cheaper proposition most of the time as it is -- ~$8-9 x2, 5-10 for some sort of drink/snacks for me and my GF.... that right there covers a blind buy and hitting up the gas station for a snack or two.

Many people don't go to the movies alone, so going to the movies is a $20-50+ dollar trip (more depending on if you're bringing a family).

I'd love it if it happened, as I prefer watching movies at home to theaters anyways. I have a feeling this is a case of misunderstanding... no major studio would think of doing this in the way stated.

That and people would not buy the DVD because they just saw it 3 weeks earlier. The key is waiting a few months at least to give the viewer some time to want to watch it again.

I've always thought it was at least 6 months after the theatrical release for us consumers to get the DVD.

The problem with this scenario is that it costs roughly $8.50 PER PERSON. The average family has 3-6 people in it. One trip to the movies (accounting for kids rates) would cost $23-$41 for tickets alone. Not to mention the candy and soda these kids want as well. $25-$30 for a Blu-Ray is way cheaper when you look at it.

I'm not a fan of the theatre either. People playing with their phones, talking, bringing 2-5 year olds to an R-RATED MOVIE!!!!! I'll take time on the couch with my wife on one arm, a beer in the other and my feet up on the coffee table over the theatre any day of the week, and a double feature on Sunday!

I have to agree with Peech on this one. If they released the movie on DVD/Blu/HD-DVD only 3 weeks or so after it's theatre debut, they would lose a LOT of money on box office sales.... it makes no sense at all to do that unless the movie did poorly in the box office. There are also issues with having enough time to gather together all the extras and put together a decent release on disc, that takes a lot of work. Frankly I'm suprised at how fast some of these newer movies are making their way to Disc, I Am Legend for example is arriving on Blu-ray next month and I just saw it a couple days ago.

About the earlier comments about you'd still go see Transformers, etc, that's true. People would likelys till go see the big movies maybe once a month if that. However, all the non-blockbusters would pretty well die and have no one go see them in theaters with people preferring to wait a month and rent or buy it.

Plus as there is, there's quite a few that rent first before buying a movie, which would probably increase in numbers, so I bet the studios wouldn't benefit by makin the $25 from a blu or $20 from a DVD over the $8.50 from the cinema nearly as much as you might think they would with people renting before buying.

I don't really go to the cinema. The cinemas around here aren't that great anyway. I wish faster releases really happened. Actually I wish they did it, but Blu-ray only not SD. The SD discs can come later. *evilgrin*

+1 Too many people talking during movies at the theater. There's too many times that I feel like I wasted my money because there were people talking.

Also, Spider-man 3 was quite a bit better on Blu-ray. I actually enjoyed it more. It looks and sounds phenomenal!
