Default New Planet of the Apes from Disney/Fox (Wes Ball)

Quote:
The move makes 'Apes' one of the first historically significant Fox titles to get the redevelopment treatment since Disney's acquisition of the storied studios.

The Apes are back. Fox has brought on Wes Ball, the filmmaker behind the popular Maze Runner film series, to develop and direct a new Planet of the Apes feature, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The move makes Apes one of the first historically significant Fox titles to get the redevelopment treatment since Disney’s acquisition of the storied studio.

The original Planet of the Apes film, based on a novel by French writer Pierre Boulle and starring Charlton Heston, centers on an astronaut who lands on a planet and discovers an advanced ape civilization ruling over primitive humans. In the final, infamous twist, he learns he is actually on Earth, which had suffered an apocalyptic nuclear war.

The movie was a commercial and critical hit upon its 1968 release and spawned numerous sequels and a TV series throughout the 1970s. In 2001, Tim Burton remade the movie as an action-adventure that failed to excite audiences. However, Fox found success again with a reboot trilogy that began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, an origin story chronicling how the primates took over that featured envelope-pushing motion-capture technology and a stirring performance by Andy Serkis as the Moses-like leader of the apes, Caesar.

It is unclear whether the latest Apes project is meant to be a new reboot or an extension of the previous film series.

Ball’s Maze Runner trilogy, set in its own dystopian future, grossed almost $1 billion worldwide while being produced on modest budgets. The filmmaker was due to tackle a pricey and special effects-heavy adaptation of Boom! Comics' Mouse Guard before that project was shelved by Disney earlier this year.

With Joe Hartwick Jr., his partner at Oddball Entertainment, Ball is producing series The Night Market for Disney+.

He is repped by Paradigm and Stone Genow.

The irony here is Disney cancelled Wes Ball's $175 million passion project Mouse Guard, and here he is, tail tucked between his legs, working for the company on another unnecessary sequel/reboot

Why not just bring back Reeves as the world builder/creative director?

His two Apes movies were phenomenal. And even with the loss of Serkis not coming back as Caesar (possible he could return as another character since it's mo-cap), Reeves has built a great world.

Or how about not make any more since Reeves already created a great trilogy with a perfectly fitting conclusion. Also, Reeves is a little busy at the moment if you weren't aware. Interestingly, the screenwriter for The Batman may be doing the screenplay for this.

Totally agree. Just have it take place way after the final original-saga film or whatever. The original itself is a classic and I even enjoy the sequels for the most part. They mostly hold up but are certainly "charmingly cheesey" at times.

But, there is no need to reboot these. None.

Reeves didn't do Rise. That was Rupert Wyatt.

I know Reeves is busy with Batman, but it's not like Apes is gonna be coming out anytime soon. This is just the preliminary stuff. Hasn't The Batman already begun some pre-production?

Yes - I probably worded my statement wrong. Ive seen and own the first 4 original POTA films. The 5th one was just too cheesey so we are content to end it when the Apes take over L.A. at the end of the 4th film.

What I meant for a new film would be to have it take place long after the LAST of the original films, meaning after the 5th movie.

The previous movie felt very underwhelming so my expectations for this one aren't high either.

Not interested just by the director alone. His work didn't do anything for me. It's alright but nothing stands out in his quality or style.

Unless they went bold and actually adapted the book as it is, I don't seem match value for more PotA stuff. They went the right route w/ Caesar. Rise is mediocre and generic as hell but Reeves honed that property in right and it was awesome for it.

I like all three Maze Runner films and everything, but please leave the Apes franchise alone......for a little while longer, at least.

The ending for the recent trilogy was beautiful, so.....can we just reminisce on that for a decade maybe?

Just be glad it's a real movie, and not another streaming series.

Of the new ones I only like Rise the most. I would like to think it as a direct prequel to the original, but the astronaut from the original should've already left Earth before Rise happened because he had no idea how the apes came into power. I wished they showed the spaceship launched when the film opened, maybe at least reported in the news in the background TV or something.

There’s no way it can be better than Dawn and War, but I love this franchise so I’m interested in seeing what their idea is.

They did do that in the movie at one point. And the astronauts in question would not have known how the apes came into power because the apes weren't in power yet when they left. However:

Different origin for the apes. It's a 'pre-boot' as opposed to a prequel.

They should use real apes, give them bubblegum to chew on, and play in a rock band like Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp. They can call it "Evolution Revolution of the Apes". I might actually want to see that.
