Default ‘The Griswolds’ (HBO Max Series)

Quote:
The Griswold family is heading to HBO Max. WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service has put in development The Griswolds, a half-hour single camera comedy based on National Lampoon’s Vacation films, from writer Tim Hobert (The Middle), Johnny Galecki and his Alcide Bava Productions and Warner Bros. TV, where Galecki and Alcide Bava are under a deal.

Written by Hobert, The Griswolds, based on Warner Bros’ Vacation films, brings the iconic family home from vacation and explores their daily lives in the suburbs of modern-day Chicago.

National Lampoon’s Vacation film series is among the assets available to WarnerMedia-owned HBO Max for mining of projects. The five-film series (1983-2015) is based on John Hughes’ short story Vacation ’58 that was originally published by National Lampoon magazine. It revolves around the misadventures of the Griswold family, whose attempts to enjoy vacations and holidays are plagued with non-stop disasters and strangely embarrassing predicaments. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo starred in all five films as the parents, Clark and Ellen Griswold, while the Griswold kids were portrayed throughout the film series by different actors. Galecki played Rusty Griswold in 1989’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Hobert executive produces with Alcide Bava’s Galecki and Holly Brown, and Cory Wood producing. Alcide Bava produces in association with Warner Bros. TV.

That would be cool if that was the case, but it really doesn't specify.

It says that Galecki will be a producer on the show, but doesn't specify if we will be in it as Rusty or in any capacity.

So this could be a continuation of some form, or it could be a complete reboot from the ground up for all we know.

I would be glad to see it if it were to end up being as you described here.

This is very interesting news, casting would be intriguing, anyone know how well Johnny got on with Chevy during the Christmas Vacation filming haha

I would think if they were bringing Chase and D’Angelo in then that would be something they’d specify right out of the gate. Since it’s not in there I’m guessing we won’t see them other than maybe in cameo form.

At least it's pretty much guaranteed to better than Vegas Vacation.

I think the movies should've stopped after the first one, not really a fan of the rest of the series (no, not even Christmas Vacation). I'd probably check it out one day if Chevy was involved because I do like him for the most part.

It could work if it is a continuation of the 'reboot', keeping grandpa Chase and grandma D’Angelo as guests. I don't see anyone replacing them...

Or they could go with the Evil Dead remake route: a new family with new names, but similar situations. I would like to see different holiday adventures: Easter, Halloween, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day...

I actually liked Vegas Vacation.

This will all depend on casting for me, if I don't like somebody then I typically don't watch the things they do... so I'll wait and see.

You aren't alone. I liked it too. It's probably the worst of the four movies but Randy Quaid is so good in it. Highlights include his visit to the "booffet" and his reply to Clark about radiation ("All I can say is my teeth have never been whiter and my garden is spitting out 50 pound tomatoes").

And there's a nice cameo from a certain person from the first movie that ends with a great gag.

I liked Vega Vacation too. It’s awesome.

This sounds pretty cool too. I never thought about just focusing on their daily lives. Lots of stuff you could come up with.

Isn’t it canon that Ed Helms and Leslie Mann play grown-up Rusty and Audrey?

I don't think there's such a thing as canon with Vacation films... Eddie's daughter was younger than Rusty in Christmas Vacastion, but in Vegas Vacation she seems to be the same age as Audrey. Can't really have canon when they recast the kids in each movie.

I personally would like Ethan Embry back as an adult Rusty... but maybe that's just because he was in so many movies I liked around the time of Vegas Vacation. Plus Grace & Frankie is ending so he'll be free.

Without Chevy Chase in his prime, I simply don't see the appeal. At all. He completely carried the original films and you can't replace him.

Vegas Vacation isn't even the worst movie in franchise, that belongs to the dumpster fire that was the 2015 reboot. So if this is better than that garbage then we'll absolutely be fine.

I enjoyed the reboot.

By far the worst movie in the franchise is Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure. Sure it was made for TV, but it features the original Cousin Eddie and his wife as well as the original Audrey from the first Vacation film. So I consider it canon.

I know but it's easier to re-cast kids, once they're adults (and especially in Rusty's case where they have shown he has a family) you can't really replace that. I just mean it be weird if Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo returned but Ed Helms and Christina Applegate didn't and are replaced by new actors and could very well have different kids than what was shown in Vacation 2015.
