Default The Running Man (1987) - BD - Umbrella - Feb 5th 2020

Umbrella Entertaiment are releasing the classic 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie The Running Man on Blu-ray February 5th 2020.

Unfortunately this release contains no extras, bonus features or subtitles unlike the previous 2011 or the 2019 UK release.

Ubrella $14.95
JB HiFi $15.98
EzyDVD $19.97
Booktopia $23.95
Sanity $24.99

Hopefully this is an improvident over the previous release. Both the original released August 2011

Aparently Paramount now own the rights to this movie and have licensed it out to fabulous and now Umbrella. The old release is done by some strange uncommon BD company called Duke Marketing who ported Lionsgates disc for Region B

From what I can tell Duke Marketing LTD is a British company called Duke Video. They are the world’s largest distributor of motorsport-oriented home entertainment products. They are not really known for there home movie and entertainment releases.

Based in the Isle of Man, to be precise. I've only come in contact with them since they were, and are, the sole distributor of the 2008 Ellan Vannin single and music video by Robin Gibb for the benefit of a local hospice on his and brothers Barry and Maurice place of birth. Outside of that and the following year's commemorative DVD of the Bee Gees receiving the Freedom of the Borough of Douglas on the Isle of Man honour they haven't had any subsequent purchases by me despite the number of product catalogues that I've received over the years.

Like you said, their non-motorsporting products aren't that many and motorsports aren't really my bag. No doubt the cost of shipping said catalogues to me far exceeds the amount I spent on their products.

Umbrella, eh? What's up with the Fabulous logo in the bottom right corner. A straight port of their UK BD?

Probably just a temp cover with the Aussie rating logo slapped on there. Umbrella hasn't posted any info to their site yet, but I'd assume they'll be doing their own artwork for it. Either way I'll just hold onto my original BD, no doubt this will just be a different encode of the same master. This is pretty far down in my ranking of Schwarzeneggar's movies, so I'm not interested in upgrading it unless it gets a 4K release.

Actual cover art is up... very nice!

On the other hand, the listing on their page states no extras, so unless that's a mistake, it's gonna be barebones. Which makes the $25 price tag a bit of a slap in the face.

I guarantee it will be barebones. It won't even have a menu screen.

TBH that makes more sense than a lot of local barebones releases which have a menu screen consisting of a static image with a "Play" or "Start" button. That's just a complete waste of disc space.

Yes, that is a fair point, but a nice menu screen with an appropriate image from the film helps complete the package, plus a 'chapter selection' is always welcome.

I'm more bothered by the complete lack of optional subtitles on these types of discs. It's no good for hearing-impaired audiences, and even for those of us who aren't, sometimes dialogue can get buried in the mix and its nice to be able to wind back a bit and pop the subs on to determine what was said.

I completely agree with you. Subtitles should be a standard extra on all discs.

That would be right after I paid a arm and a leg for it to get a 2nd hand copy that was out of print a few months ago on ebay.

No subs = no purchase. Nice one, Umbrella.

Subtitles should be mandatory on all discs, and all extra features should be subtitled as well.

As someone who has hearing problems, it frustrates me no end when a disc is devoid of subtitles.

I agree, subtitles for the hard of hearing should be a minimum feature, but it all comes down to cost for distributors. As stupid as it sounds, distributors have to pay a licensing fee for every subtitle stream on a disc paid to whoever created said subtitles on top of their film licensing fee. Hence smaller labels sometimes do not do it.

Picked up a copy at today. Moved off the shelves really f*cking quickly (when you only get 3 BD's per store, that will happen).
Sold out in stores all over Brisbane today (Mt Ommaney, Kedron) and yesterday (Chermside).
The Running Man, on JB's site went from "In Stock" to "Limited Stock" sometime between 3.30pm and 8pm.
I was out at Chermside for work, which is near Kedron and was pissed I couldn't get it from either JB, when I finished at 3.30pm. Thought I'd pick up a copy from Mt. Ommaney after having dinner with the 'n laws (had stock at 3.30pm), but then they sold out! Went to Oxley, and got the 2nd last copy (someone had just rocked up and grabbed a copy, as the BD chick had to get one out of the cardboard box under the shelving).
Never underestimate the power of Arnie and Stephen King.

Since Paramount have been doing a few 4K scans lately for streaming services (eg. Beverly Hills Cop series). I hope that Umbrella's Running Man is mastered from the new 4K scan that was done for the iTunes 4K release.
Even it if is bare bones, with no menu, Umbrella can surprise with some decent transfers sometimes. Case in point: Watership Down (link to BD review below). They used the transfer prepped for Criterion... And that ain't bad.

Not really. A static screen takes up a negligible amount of space, which would have no bearing on the feature itself.

I've burned some Blu-rays recently, and the static menu screens only take up around 300kB per screen (at 1080p), which is nothing, really. Adding music however will bump it up to a few megs.

Either way, I don't see the point in including a menu if the disc is so barebones that it only includes the main feature and no additional audio/subtitle tracks whatsoever.
