Looking forward to the Hoth battle on disc. Probably my favorite battle of the series.

Agreed, can't wait for this one. The environments on Hoth should look great with HDR

Favourite Star Wars movie. Best one. It's really a pity George didn't hand over the directing on the PT similarly as he did on Empire Strikes Back. But anyways. Exciting news seeing individuals! This and the OT's other two will be owned promptly.

I kept reading that Disney are great preservationists. What a load of crap. They could have bargained with Lucas to get the unedited trilogy as well. I'll just have to stick with the comparatively mediocre 4K fan restorations.

Going to be weird for me to watch the prequels & originals without the 20th Century Fox fanfare

Why wouldn't it still be there? They're owned by Disney.

The Fox fanfares were reinstated on the Disney+ (streaming service) UHD versions, so I have some hope that the fanfare will be included again on the upcoming disc versions. No reason now why it should not, since Disney now owns Fox.

They have preserved it all, just as LFL did before them. You're just not going to see it during George's lifetime IMO.

PS

4K77 is the balls

George Lucas wanted Special Edition to be the version that will be known by posterity. He said that one day there would be no prints of the original versions and that Special Edition will be the only way people know the films as. He seems just like the kind of person who would make Disney agree to never release the unedited versions. Wouldn't be surprised if they destroyed many of the original special effects shots.

4K77 looks good for what it is. Would look a lot better from an original print with HDR is all I'm saying.

You’d think they could have, even if it was for less money. But maybe that was a dealbreaker for George.

They literally re-used the original elements to create a lot of the SE fixes, they didn't then throw them away afterwards. And if some of it has actually been recomposited again for the 4K versions (see the Digital Bits' list of changes) then that proves the VFX elements still exist. LFL archived everything of consequence. What they'd do with prints of the finished film is very different than cherry vault elements, though Lucas still has his personal Technicolour print of SW and we know for an actual fact that a 70mm print was loaned out for a recent VFX seminar.

Lucas does indeed seem like the person who would make them agree to not release the OG versions, either by a gentleman's agreement (seeing as he is still the de facto creator of the content if no longer the owner, and rights of authorship are still being respected as they would any living filmmaker) or by contract, but actually destroying the OG material? Nope. If that actually makes it harder to comprehend, that all that stuff is just sitting in the LFL vaults and we can't see it, then that's not my problem. It is what it is.

About 25 years ago, George was going around trying to champion film preservation at various film festivals and film museums around the world. Around this time, while preparing for the SE versions, he realized that the prints of the original Star Wars movies, though somewhat recent compared to these old films, were needing their own restoration (being on the verge of degrading, due to the materials used at the time, the colors were in danger of fading). And so all (the original versions) were restored in and of themselves (not just for use in the soon to be released SE versions).

That doesn't make it mediocre. Not by a long shot.

I’ve heard they vary a bit in quality throughout the prints.

Covers suck. And the bottom area with the device list is becoming silly AF. Hope the steelbooks are better. At least they aren't only doing SW in that horrible set.
