How can they afford to release a UHD of a basically unknown movie that will sell like 1000 copies? Is it because they have paid very little for the licensing and/or because they will release it in SDR and save money on the HDR pass? I'm completely baffled...

They've done it already for La rose écorchée, so I guess there IS a way to do this kind of releases anyway without compromising on the quality.
But yeah, it raises some questions. |

Wonder what the additional cost is for releasing a 4k disc compared to a blu-ray of a 4k scanned title? Can’t imagine it’s huge. And you’d have thought given the (relative) lack of 4k titles currently available, there’s probably more interest than there otherwise would be? Blood rose UHD was apparently limited to 1500 and sold out quick, whereas I imagine a 1500 run of just blu-ray would still be sitting in stock.
Would be interested to know how many UHD versions of Tammy and the T-Rex were sold by VS - didn’t take them long at all to sell out of 6000 slipcovers (split between blu and UHD versions). |

Currently, authoring and pressing UHDs are quite expensive, including being much more expensive than doing authoring and pressing a BD. If you're including it solely as a dual-format release like Le chat qui fume, you might be able to reach a critical point that allows you, thanks for combining both sales in a single package, to get a good return on investment. But if you're solely doing a UHD, it's going to be much more expensive and you're going to sell way fewer copies. Obviously, this isn't profitable at all. Quote:
I'd love that too, since they had to re-allocate multiples times some of these slips to the BD version because it was selling so much faster than the UHD combo. As we speak, the regular releases are showing as 20 BD left in stock and 423 UHDs. No idea what the original stock for these were. |

How we can do that ? Very simple. We sell 80% of our products on our website, so 100% of the sell if for us. And we receive some help each year from the french cinematography center, the CNC. Help means money :-)

Not only that, but release most of that director’s catalog, though on BD only for the rest.

Just placed my order. I figure Criterion might release it at some point, since they released Brocka's Insiang in a World Cinema Project set. But that may or may not happen, and this is a UHD with English subs, so I figured I might as well buy it.
