France Bayan Ko 4K UHD (1984)

https://www.lechatquifume.com/collec...ducts/bayan-ko

God bless those weirdos at Le chat qui fume!

Per Facebook (translated from French):

Quote:
After possession it is the turn of bayan ko lino brocka to suffer a 4 K scan at the laboratory fml. Soon in restoration with us!
Bayan ko, a totally missing movie classic, will be released at the end of 2020 on DVD / BR / UHD. We are really happy to save this little jewel.

How can they afford to release a UHD of a basically unknown movie that will sell like 1000 copies? Is it because they have paid very little for the licensing and/or because they will release it in SDR and save money on the HDR pass? I'm completely baffled...

They've done it already for La rose écorchée, so I guess there IS a way to do this kind of releases anyway without compromising on the quality.
But yeah, it raises some questions.

Wonder what the additional cost is for releasing a 4k disc compared to a blu-ray of a 4k scanned title? Can’t imagine it’s huge. And you’d have thought given the (relative) lack of 4k titles currently available, there’s probably more interest than there otherwise would be? Blood rose UHD was apparently limited to 1500 and sold out quick, whereas I imagine a 1500 run of just blu-ray would still be sitting in stock.

Would be interested to know how many UHD versions of Tammy and the T-Rex were sold by VS - didn’t take them long at all to sell out of 6000 slipcovers (split between blu and UHD versions).

It's about time this movie got released on UHD. I can't believe it took almost 4 years into the format's lifespan.

It depends on many things.
Currently, authoring and pressing UHDs are quite expensive, including being much more expensive than doing authoring and pressing a BD.
If you're including it solely as a dual-format release like Le chat qui fume, you might be able to reach a critical point that allows you, thanks for combining both sales in a single package, to get a good return on investment. But if you're solely doing a UHD, it's going to be much more expensive and you're going to sell way fewer copies. Obviously, this isn't profitable at all.

It was a DF format though. I don't think anyone knows how many of these 1500 UHDs have been watched. If I had to guess, I'd say less than 500.

I'd love that too, since they had to re-allocate multiples times some of these slips to the BD version because it was selling so much faster than the UHD combo. As we speak, the regular releases are showing as 20 BD left in stock and 423 UHDs. No idea what the original stock for these were.

How we can do that ? Very simple. We sell 80% of our products on our website, so 100% of the sell if for us. And we receive some help each year from the french cinematography center, the CNC. Help means money :-)

Not only that, but release most of that director’s catalog, though on BD only for the rest.

• LINO BROCKA by Bastian Meiresonne (1 pm)
• BAYAN KO presented by producer Véra Belmont (9 minutes, archive footage)
• BAYAN KO at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival (2 minutes, archive footage)

In Manila, in the 1980 s, Turing Manalastas and his wife Luz, workers in a printing house, lived modestly in the capital of the Philippines undergoing social movement. Pregnant, the young woman is forced to rest, and the couple has additional expenses. Turing arrives at an arrangement with his employer, Mr. Lim, on condition that he does not join the union that is being put up in the printing shop. Despite this, unable to pay for the hospital where Luz gave birth, Turing has to reluctantly accept Lando's proposal, a childhood friend, to rob Mr. Lim's house.

Shot during President Ferdinand Marcos's regime, in a context of economic decline and corruption, Bayan ko (′′ My Homeland ′′) was originally the title of a song that became the anthem of opponents to Marcos. Openly engaged film, Bayan Ko managed to illegally release the Philippines to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984. The work, considered the most engaged by its author, Lino Brocka (Manila, Les Insoumis), is a magnificent anthem to The freedom of the Filipino people, but also a nervous and incisive thriller, offered to you in Blu-ray and UHD format exclusively in a restored copy.

I assume so. It might well be in French, too.

Just placed my order. I figure Criterion might release it at some point, since they released Brocka's Insiang in a World Cinema Project set. But that may or may not happen, and this is a UHD with English subs, so I figured I might as well buy it.

This was an easy pre-order - it's not often you see Filipino cinema getting such a lavish release, let alone on UHD! I'm still waiting on simple Blu-Ray releases for Himala, Manila by Night, and Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.
