I'm not a fan of the Brosnan era in general, but THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH is the nadir of his tenure. This is one of the dullest - and most listlessly directed - entries in the whole series, and though there are plenty of explosions and things going up in flames, even the action sequences fail to generate much excitement. The plot concentrating on oil pipelines is beyond drab, and M stupidly setting herself up for her own kidnapping - Elektra King ostensibly fears for her life, but she doesn't want you to send more agents to her aid, she needs YOU!!! - is inexcusable. That lightweight Brosnan screwing up his face and raising his voice to express outrage is always good for a laugh, and though he never imparts a genuine sense of danger, he unfailingly conveys smugness.
Sophie Marceau and a briefly returning Robbie Coltrane get to chew some scenery, but to little avail...and what can you say about a film where the terrific character actor Robert Carlyle is cast as a villain and fails to make any impression whatsoever? Honestly, Denise Richards as Dr.Christmas Jones (what, the writers didn't believe they could get any bad one-liners or puns out of naming her Thanksgiving Jones? Why not go full-blown absurd and name her Washington's Birthday Jones?) is the least of this movie's problems... Sorry to go off on a rant, as I do respect the opinions of my fellow Bond fans and realize some of them love this 007 entry, but if LICENSE TO KILL doesn't take this one it can only be due to Russian interference. |

Licence to Kill will win this?? Please...The only thing good about this movie is the soundtrack and that can have the opposite feeling if you listen to it more than 2/3 times in the same day....
The World is Not Enough might not be the best Brosnan movie, ofc not but its far better than any Dalton screw up. Licence to kill really?? With that Davi guy? Worst villain ever in a bond movie, never scared me. If any that bond girl was much more scary than Davi...Or that poorly executed Shark scene??? In a movie from the 80`s, after Jaws....Screw up!!! The World is Not Enough is an eye candy and has someking of real villain or enemy thats not an usual stupid bond villain. First time a Bond movie went that way giving the idea that anyone could be a villain not only because they want power or wtv. Robert Carlyle is as good as you can get and please, Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards at their best. Go hide yourself if u choose LTK please... Even Benicio Del Toro is ashamed of being in that non sense movie... Last edited by scifisuperfan; 04-05-2020 at 12:01 AM. |

License To Kill:
- great script (writer Richard Maibaum's last 007 feature film, thank you), Dalton in absolute top form, Carey Lowell is great, Robert Davi steals every scene he's in, Q becomes a field agent, Gladys Knight's theme song is top-tier, silly humor and the usual reliance on gadgets has been toned down this time. One hilarious flaw: when Bond arrives in the bank with a suitcase full of cash, all the dollar bundles stacked all around the bank mangers office, can't possible fit inside the suitcase. Perhaps 3 or 4 suitcases, but not 1. ![]() TWINE: - they tried a couple of interesting things, a female main villain, M gets directly involved in the plot and the final showdown in the sinking sub is pretty tense. However, this is also the film that initiated the concept of absolutely dumb in the Brosnan era Bond films (DAD followed this film). The Bond girl is laughable, the plot is pretty stupid when you think about it and the film is tonally confused. Brosnan sometimes play the scenes straight, although everything that goes on around him is way overblown or silly. Easy win for my top 5th Bond film; License To Thrill Me. ![]() |

This is really tough. They're both about equal for me. TWINE is my favorite Brosnan and LTK is my favorite Dalton. I have such vivid memories of seeing TWINE opening day as a double feature with Sleepy Hollow. I just love the whole thing. The opening is my favorite in the series. I love the Garbage title song. Marceau and Carlyle are terrific villains. Arnold's score is top notch. The action is great. LTK is equally awesome, with Benicio Del Toro and Robert Davi as excellent villains and the truck chase is to die for. Also love Cary Lowell as the female lead. Q gets out in the field. It's all great stuff. But I give the ever so slight edge to TWINE overall.

I am not really a fan of either movie. Don't get me wrong, I don't think either one is completely terrible (far from the bottom of the Bond pile) I just don't find many reasons to revisit either one. With regards to 'Licence to Kill,' I have already stated the fact that I find a certain character completely grating which kills the serious mood they were attempting. Both leading ladies are completely bland (Talisa Soto is one note while Carey Lowell never really pulled off the 'tough woman' mode they were trying for with the character). Bond and the main villains really save this movie for me (Davi is absolutely electric when he is on screen).
As for 'The World is Not Enough,' I liked that they tried something different by [Show spoiler] , and Sophie Marceau was terrific in her role. Brosnan even gets some deep emotional moments to try and shine. I fully admit that they were trying some interesting things with the screenplay, but the execution was flawed. And yes, Denise Richardson is waaay miscast as a Nuclear scientist (especially with the outfits she wears). Plus the villain Renard was completely underused and rather bland.Due to the strength of the villains, I voted for Licence to Kill. |

Licence to Kill
One of my top five favorite Bond films. Dalton at his best! Robert Davi as a chilling villain! Benicio del Toro as his henchman! Exciting action sequences! Anthony Zerbe's explosive end! Wayne Newton! This film has it all. |

License To Kill is an easy choice for me.
The World Is Not Enough is my least favorite Bond film of the entire series. Terrible Bond girl (Richards), terrible villain (Dr. Evil... I mean Robert Carlyle), lifeless action sequences (except the opening scene), terrible Bond song.... As I've stated before, I don't hate any of the films, (this one rates a 2.5 out of 5, a rating that only applies to this one-- 3.0 to 5.0 for the rest), and this still has some things I like-- Sophie Marceau is great for instance, but, as I said, this was an easy choice. License to Kill. The only weak spot are that the girls aren't quite up to snuff. And of course Bond making out with that little boy in the pool at the end.
