Yesterday I visited an AV show in London and on display were three playable PS3's, running Motorstorm, Resistance and Lair.
Because it was a Friday it wasn't too busy and I didn't have to wait too long to get my hands on a controller. this PS3 was running Resistance. Here's what I found: The pad is very light! But also feels as sturdy as the PS2 version. The R2 & L2 triggers are smooth so I can imagine a sweaty finger slipping a little, but all the shoulder buttons felt very smooth to use. As this was a first person shooter I was keen to see how the new "more sensitive" sticks would work, and I was pleased to see that I was running around and targeting with ease! The pad gets a thumbs up. To my right was Lair where the player was flying the dragon using nothing but tilt control. Also, no lag at all on my game, and bear in mind there were two other PS3's with pads running, and there was no interference. The game, what can I say. I was barely 2 feet away from the screen and everything was beautifully in focus. I want this game! There was so much going on but absolutely no slowdown, frame issues, etc, it all ran like a dream. Motorstorm was attracting the most attention, and it's easy to see why, it's a bright, loud, in your face frantic racer (sadly I didn't get a go). I definitely want Resistance, more than ever! I'll have some photos loaded soon, so check back later or tomorrow. The big downer is that I now have to wait five months to play one again, while some of you only have a couple of weeks....bah! |

I actually visited the annual Sony Expo here in Honolulu yesterday, and I was also able to play Resistance. It seems to be a very polished game, though FPS isn't quite my genre. I wish they had Lair on hand at our event, it would have been cool to use the motion controls with the dragons. I did see Motorstorm, and it did look great, but it felt a little lacking that "sense of speed". All in all though, the PS3 has a pretty good showing for it's launch titles. I personally can't wait for FFXIII and MGS4.

Great thread!
Partridge: Would you say that the controllers are basically identical to the PS2's in terms of size and feel or did you feel any subtle differences? From everything I've seen, they look like PS2 controllers with the motion sensitivity added and sadly, rumble feature, taken out. Am I oversimplying that? Resistance and MotorStorm look like two great games and Lair is really starting to catch my eye as well. |

The pads have triggers on L2/R2 rather than buttons and the sticks are a bit more sensitive also.
There's also a new playstation button in the middle. And not to mention it's wireless and you can turn the PS3 on with it. Lot of new stuff on that pad, and yeah, minus rumble. It's about five steps forward one step back. Last edited by Applefiend; 11-04-2006 at 02:03 PM. |

It's subtle and you don't think about it, bu trust me: You notice its complete abscence when it's not there. Sublime. ![]() |

JTK - The pads do feel identical to the current dualshocks, so it is entirely possible they are basically the same mould with some modification! The pad certainly felt familiar. Though I found that to be a good thing, it meant I could just get on with playing the game.
I've been using wireless (and rumble-less)pads for a while on my PS2 and I haven't really missed it. The shouldler buttons themselves felt different though, obviously the bottom ones are now triggers, but in this game were being used as "old style" flippers to change weapon. But both they and the top set felt, well, "good" - the pad felt solid despite it's low weight. That 50+ inch SXRD was superb Deciazulado ; thanks for editing! This is my first attempt at adding images, sorry for taking up so much space originally. Last edited by Deciazulado; 11-04-2006 at 02:32 PM. Reason: No worries, partridge! |
