Microsoft has confirmed that both the Xbox One X and the Xbox One S digital edition will be discontinued
“As we ramp into the future with [XSX], we’re taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition” https://t.co/GR3xRmuNTS https://t.co/xrBLQwQNnY |

I think this pretty much confirms the Series S will be an all digital middle ground console (thus making the One X redundant). So they will have the One S as the bottom line entry point (and 4K player), the middle tier Series S for digital only and then the big daddy Series X for the hardcore gamers.
The One X is also more expensive to produce than the One S and would compete directly power wise with the Series S. With X Cloud the One S will be capable of playing all next gen games available on it as long as you have a strong enough internet connection. |

To me, with their potentially lower price point even over PS5, combined with a Ultimate Game Pass and xCloud combo, they could have a really strong value proposition and seen as "Next gen" from a marketing PoV by Joe Public. The question i am most curious to see answered though is that if Series S becomes so popular as an entry point, does this leave MS as a victim of their own success if they cannot shift Series X in meaningful numbers and yet all that power difference means jack when PS5 still sells like hotcakes. Digital or Disk. |

I think the Series X is targeted at the same crowd as the One X was, maybe a bit broader. Microsoft is more concerned about their 'ecosystem' and subscription revenues rather than being seriously focused on which box is moving the most. They, like Sony, obviously would prefer the digital versions to be the most successful if they had to choose though because of the revenue split.
Physical media is declining, but it won't be completely gone for a long time, if ever. DVD still sells like crazy for crying out loud. And now vinyl has had a huge resurgence. There will always be a place for physical, it will just become more niche as time goes by. |

I mean if the games that come out for the next 2 years are compatible with any of the Xbox Ones, then they're still right. They don't want anyone buying them right now, but if you have one, you'll still be able to play the new games
