Anyone remember this show from the late 80's. Not related to Jason at all but same studio owned both so they decided to name it this way to attract more viewers. It was about a trio who would hunt down cursed antiques that give their possessors a power or some reward for killing someone. Still cannot believe that it hasn't been released on Blu-ray yet. Anyone have any info on a release. Just cannot find any info anywhere.

I used to love the show, back when it aired on TV. I bought the complete series on DVD some time ago, but have yet to watch it. I would certainly buy it on Blu-ray. Monsters is my most wanted though, after Night Gallery, as I don't own that one at all.

One of the best shows on TV in 1980's.
Season 3 had some of the BEST written episodes yet people skip it. It would be a miracle if this show was cleaned up digitally...zero way for a HD release. |

The circumstances under which this show was cancelled are particularly annoying, almost making people forget just how successful Friday the 13th: The Series was. Initially (and enviably) put out by Paramount as a sweetener in a package with Star Trek: The Next Generation, it went on to become one of the highest-rated syndicated dramas shows on TV.
It was all wine and roses, but then came Donald Wildmon and the Moral Majority enforcers, who wanted a very visible "scalp" for their crusade. With the huge success of the F13 films, they turned their attention to the TV series. They neither knew nor cared that it wasn't linked to the films, or even that it wasn't particularly violent - publically bringing it down was all that mattered. They started a pressure campaign against it, with Wildmon continually (and ridiculously) mentioning Jason in his rants. In turn, advertising sponsors were taking the heat for endorsing such an "evil" show, eventually having to pull out because their businesses were being directly threatened with boycott campaigns by the moral crusaders. The sponsors loved the show and the numbers it was pulling in, along with the inevitable bump in sales it generated, but it was all too much. With evaporating revenue from advertising and the Moral Majority on their back, Paramount didn't want to fight, and just cancelled the show. It's rather telling that this particular "scalp" was the beginning of Wildmon's big career as an evangelist - clearly the big splash he wanted to kick-start it all. As for blu releases of the series? Not much chance, as although they were shot on 35mm film, the standard Paramount process of editing them on tape was in full force. OK, they went back and redid all of the aforementioned ST:TGN from scratch, but was a much more lucrative prospect (being willing to the pay $10m costs) not to mention that the likelihood of the F13 negs (or even dupes) existing are very slim, unlike most of the TNG materials. The most you can hope for is that they use the extra capacity of blu to bring out a much more manageable collection from the video-based masters, possibly (or unsettlingly...) with some use of AI to clean them up a bit. As someone who stayed up late on Friday nights to watch them at 2.00am here in the UK, it's a shame that they'll probably never look as good as they could/should. What channel was this shown on in the UK? I can remember Tales from The Crypt being very popular and watching that as a kid in the early - mid 90s but never saw this or Freddy’s Nightmares.

Oh, and about 10 years ago, the whole lot was repeated on the Horror Channel. I still have all of my tape releases, purely for sentimental reasons. The release of the two-part opener to season 3 is like gold-dust. By that time, there was little interest in sticking TV shows out for rental, and they marketed it as just "The Prophecies", erasing all connection to the show and hoping to trick punters into thinking it was a standalone horror film. friday's curse.jpg Last edited by CompleteCount; 10-21-2023 at 06:35 PM. |

Cool show. Cronenberg directed a fx-heavy episode in the first season.
I like the two-part haunted Amish quilt spectacular. |

They should revive THIS show as opposed to whatever A24 is doing.

The Long Road Home from season three is probably my favorite episode. Great Texas Chainsaw-inspired little ditty, even if the Micki & Johnny romance was terribly awkward.
There’s a good behind the scenes book called Curious Goods that has some fantastic interviews and info about the show. Definitely recommended for fans. |

I was 9 when this show was cancelled and before the internet I had no clue WTF was going on and if it even was cancelled.
I remember they changed the air times and it was on at different times and stuff and for a kid that's like being in the total dark ya know? I'd have to snag a TV guide or those TV guides that came in the Sunday newspaper to see when it would be on TV. |

Such poor pq quality. I bought this way before it came in a set.. Paid 38$ + tax for each season on dvd. Watched it 10 times. I would pay 38$ again + tax for each season if it got an hd restoration.

This show deserves a continuation, I would enjoy a Remake called the 13th hour staring Maynard James Keenan as Ryan and John De LeMay as Jack. directed by Rob Zombie.
Granted Maynard might be against playing Ryan so maybe he could be Uncle Lewis…change the name to uncle Lucius…definitely need a cute red head, maybe Molly C. Quinn and Ryan played by Asa Butterfield? This series should be 13 episodes long at approx. 45 min an episode ![]() The show should run for 5 seasons with a grand conclusion. |
