Having recently discovered the joys of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra, Gravity Falls, The Dragon Prince - and given how good (most of) the Star Wars animated kids shows became - I'm cautiously optimistic for this.

First look at the characters and designs from the show:

Also, in a change to what was originally announced it turns out that the show is going to appear on Paramount+ in the US before it goes to Nickelodeon.

That doesn't look any way shape or form like Star Trek. They are just slapping a Trek label on random shit now.

Travelling through space searching for adventure and meaning are classic Star Trek themes.

I'll try it since I watch everything Trek but Im not holding my breath. It could surprise me though. It does have Janeway in it, so thats at least something.

Same thing can be said for many Sci-Fi stories that feature a crew on a Spaceship exploring other Planets. Like look at The Orville. It does not hide the fact that it is a copy of Star Trek.

Well, it's not Star Trek for a start. It looks like a throwaway Star Wars project. Not like it matters. Both titles have been releasing the worst possible material anyway. I'll stick to showing my kids the classic shows.

I love that it's an all alien cast. Those designs are visually quite gorgeous too. Not expecting anything amazing from this as it's explicitly aimed at younger kids, but I'm still looking forward to it. I'm happier for Star Trek to continue to expand to be different things than sticking to a rigid idea.

Yes, but that comparison concedes that this does in fact seem a lot like Trek (which, of course, it is).

Personally, I am perfectly happy with the franchise expanding in different ways. To remain fresh, certain shows or movies need to not simply be another by-the-numbers installment in a franchise. Doesn't mean it'll be good necessarily, but it doesn't mean it'll be bad either.

Star Trek has changed gears before. Decades ago we had the first Trek animated series, DS9 wasn't even set on a ship and had a darker tone/themes, Lower Decks is basically a comedy, etc.

I know, none of that makes any difference to what I posted though.

It's times like this I'm exceedingly glad I gave up on modern Trek once the first JJ Abrams messterpiece hit.

Yeah, I don’t like the designs and am failing to see Trek here too but I’ll give it a go.

I was happy to be wrong about LOWER DECKS.

Anyone else getting a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe from the characters? Just me? Hmm.

I'll give it a chance. Lower Decks was a pleasant surprise so maybe this will be too.

First look at Janeway:

The show will be set in 2383. That's after Voyager and before ST: Picard.

Voice cast announced, that's a pretty good line up.
