to the people who have 200 and 300 odd blu ray collections do you love your whole blu ray collection or has it become an obsession where you just buy titles for the sake of having them in your collections?

I watch alot of movies, always have.
I have over 6000 actual dvds(meaning they are all factory releases, no DVD-R) and around 356 blu-rays and as of recently some other formats as well. No reason at all, I dont go to the movies I invest in mine for the home.

I havent figured out why I have cable as I barely watch Tv other than the news and weather.

real question is, do you feel like your DVDs are a waste since its only a matter of time when they are obsolete like VHS?

I feel that way whenever I buy a movie I already have on DVD, plus they got horrible resell rates and trade in values

Ofcourse you can say they are not a waste cause they will always play, but they still wont have the same quality, and over time that blu ray quality is what you will come to expect as you probably already do!

As for the original question, It was obcessive with DVD for me, I used to have like 1,000. However I've always been selective when I buy, esp with blu-ray because of the price, and I dont wanna buy one that is fresh on my mind knowing I wont watch it for months, if not a year, as I've got quite a few still wrapped, just waiting for the mood where I wanna watch the movie and its not fresh on my mind POTC 3 for instance.

I'm not quite at the 200/300 level, but I do have 126 blu-ray and 120 HD DVD.

I'll admit there've been some (20 maybe) that I've bought just because they were on sale and were blind buys. It can get a bit addictive, for sure, but I watch everything I buy at least twice. I keep movies going in my players quite a bit.

Lately, more of my purchases have been just because I like blu-rays. For me, the recent releases have been less than top-notch. Still I like to buy at least one per week. Typically I will add a few movies every week to my blu-ray's wanted list and only pick up the must haves on release week. I wait for BOGO's and good discounts to pick up the rest on my list.

I am a movie lover. So having 251 BD choices is a great thing. There have been quite a few blind buys and many pleasant surprises. The ones that I didnt like I just sold on Ebay and it was basically as if I was renting it. As for my SDs, I have been selling them at a rapid pace. At the beginning of last year I had about a 1000. Now I am down to a little over 600.

I don't have that many Blu-ray discs, but I have purchased a few that I probably never would have just because there weren't too many choices in the beginning. Spring and Summer last year were pretty lean on blu-ray releases, but starting last Fall, my collection has grown by leaps and bounds.

I previously did the same thing with DVDs. When they first came out, there weren't too many movies and I bought stuff that I would never think of buying now.

I spend most of my entertainment dollar on movies and music. I don't go to the theater anymore since they have just about become unbearable. So, even before blu-ray, I would blind buy most of my movies and if I don't like them and know I will never watch them again, I give them away or sell them on ebay. Same goes for blu-ray. I have many that are still wrapped and may not be watched for many months. Buying many blu-rays recently in a short period of time was not a big deal for me because I buy a lot anyway, so yes, some were bought, just for the sake of helping BLU win, but I never bought any blu-rays just to buy them. I only buy if I truly intend to watch them, or to replace their DVD counterpart.

We have 3 kids, 2 of whom are little ones, so getting to a theater is a rare experience. Since I have a very flexible schedule as a business owner, I will sometimes go to the theater by myself after lunch if there's something I REALLY want to see. But for the most part, we buy movies to enjoy at home. It's just easier, and certainly less expensive. Also, I am a popcorn fanatic, and I love experimenting with different recipes... stuff you can't do @ the theater.

I agree with other posters that the theater experience is getting pretty unbearable. It's like the mall... just too many douche bag teenagers, both male and female alike, ruining it for everyone else by being obnoxious.

As for my Blu-ray collection, which is approaching 100 titles now, I've basically been buying movies I know I'll enjoy, with the occasional blind buy (all of which, knock on wood, have been good so far). My time is very valuable, so having the convenience of ownership vs. rental is good for us as a family. There's a lot of movies that get watched 2-3 times a week in this house. I dread what'll happen if the Land Before Time series ever comes to Blu-ray...

Judging from some peoples collections I would say they do. As long as they enjoy it, then more power to them, their money, but I would need a cleansing and a long shower if I purchased crap like Norbit, I Know Who Killed Me, Are We There Yet or Ultraviolet.

I just like watching movies that make me go "whoah!". There have been an equal number of deliberate as well as blind buys. But I'm just getting started.

Reality TV sucks hairy Glenn Beck balls, and that's all that seems to be on the air during prime time these days. Go Blu!

I love movies, but buying for the sake of buying is not my thing. I will admit, I will probably buy alot more BD's titles (that I would never have bought on SD) because the High Def experience is so awesome. I will probably never purchase another SD Movie, and will likely weed out most of my SD collection.

It all started with DVD, it does become addictive and I did buy titles that I wouldnt rewatch.

But the feeling of having a libary of films I love, that I can watch when ever is great.

Like others I dont go to the movies anymore, and am an avid film watcher.. so to me the price is justified.

not sure if I am at 200 yet, but if not it is close. And the answer is a bit of both. I don't believe in renting (too much of a hassle and no guaranty you can have what you want when you want it) or going to the theatre (I am guaranteed a perfect presentation at home, while at the theatre there might be a bad set-up or people talking...). So I buy the movies I would see some other way. If that is what you would call buying for the sake of having them then yes. But for me there is only one option, if I want to see something I must buy it. Then I can see it when I feel like it. My collection has always had 10-30 unseen movies but that list is constantly changing

even though I had some VHS tapes, the same is true here. The cheap DVDs (I bought some as low as 3$) created the indifference of going to the rental place. The rental place was always out of the new new releases that where popular, so those you bought for convenience, the rest I used to rent but then with DVDs prices on a particular movie dropping every few months and other specials it came to the point where my buying habit was enough to sustain me and I realized I liked being able to see an old title that the video place might have gotten rid of, I really liked not having to get ready and go out and decide what movie to get (especially when you are a group) now it is "look at the shelf and let's pick one we are all interested in"

I have a collection of about 110 Blu-ray movies now. I purchased 75% of my collection because I plan to watch them several times (I am a true fan of these movies). I purchased 15% of my collection for the sake of the format war (to help the weekly numbers). The additional 10% were purchased because of BOGO's. I have used the BOGO's to pick up movies that I would have normally skipped. So far I've been happy with the results of taking a chance. Example: Hairspray was very entertaining and I originally overlooked this movie.
