Hi everyone, I wonder can anyone help.
From what I can tell, there appear to be x2 versions of the "Back to the Future Part II" soundtrack/soundeffects used of at least one scene (I have not noticed any differences anywhere else in the film - though that doesn't mean there aren't other differences somewhere). During the scene with Strickland + Marty + the drive-by-thugs, when Strickland fires off his shotgun, ![]() This first one, Stricklands gunshots sound much more BANG-BANG powerful, and I am certain I remember the gunshots here sound the same on an old VHS I used to have (skip to about 16secs, and ignore the fact the dialogue is in another language - just listen to Stricklands gunshot sound): These other two Stricklands gunshots have much softer sounds, reminds me of the altered gunshot soundeffects in "The Terminator" and "Batman (4K)" which all sound really soft and squeaky for guns IMO ![]() (skip to about 1min:09secs): What I would like to know is: (1) Just which one of these is the original soundeffect for this gunshot? (2) Just which gunshot soundeffects for this scene is used on ANY UK BLURAY (etc) release soundtrack *and this has been released indivdually and as many trilogy boxsets over time as far as I know ![]() (3) Are there any other soundeffects throughout the film that have been changed. Would be a little strange if this was the only soundeffect change in this film, but companies have down weirder things... ![]() Curiously, every time this shown on UK TV, it always plays the "softer gunshots" version, but that doesn't prove anything. Even if this scene has been changed, and is the only change throughout the whole film - even for just one moment / scene, I hate it when they change things in old films just because "THEY CAN".* ![]() ![]() Last edited by somerandomuser; 08-02-2020 at 02:00 PM. |

From what I can tell the second and third clip sound the same except one is more rubbish sound quality. The first one sounds louder probably because of the dub mix.

![]() First I meant compare the first video with EITHER the 2nd or 3rd (BOTH the 2nd and 3rd I know the Stricklands Gunshot soundeffect is the same softer version - I included both 2nd and 3rd video links just as reference only, regardless of youtube video/sound quality). ![]() Secondly I meant specifically compare the sound of Stricklands shotgun soundeffect, not the thugs (just in case anyone thought that's what I meant). Also the actual volume of the recordings is irrelevant, there is an actual (albeit very slight) soundeffects difference there when Strickland fires - one is sounds more like BANG ![]() ![]() I've updated my original post to include these points. ![]() Also am not querying this based purely on these youtube videos. As I said i remember clearly my old VHS copy of this had the top most YT-link Stricklands gunshot soundeffects, and all others since have the 2nd/3rd, which makes me wonder just when and where the change occured. ![]() Last edited by somerandomuser; 07-27-2020 at 05:36 PM. |

You are right, there is a difference...
I've checked the stereo track from the laserdisc and it sounds like the first youtube clip. Its not a just a quality/EQ thing on the 2nd and 3rd yt clips either as I compared them to my digital Google Play version and they sound the same. EDIT: I've uploaded a recording for comparison. First clip is from the LaserDisc, second from Google Play. https://sndup.net/554j Also notice the sounds of shells hitting the ground on the left channel after the first shot on the LD clip. ![]() Are there any other differences I wonder? Without a copy of it myself, I can't check sadly. I wonder when where and even why this change was made (and why, if perhaps it turns out it was the only sound change)? I know it's just a minor thing to be making a fuss over, but even the tinyest change like this for sound and picture in any and all TV+film bothers me when they make changes like this for no reason other than they feel like playing around with the original contents years later... ![]() Any more information from anyone on this topic greatly appreciated. ![]() |

It depends on the title, but it's fairly common for effects to change as a title goes from one sound format (and mix) to another, so from LaserDisc to DVD, to Blu-ray to UHD as well as 2.0 up to Atmos and DTS:X.
One of the reasons why it's important to include the original audio as an option. |

![]() And this and the other two Back To The Future films been re-released individually and/or boxset, what? About 4or5 times (UK anyway) on BluRay in a span of about 5 years? And not counting the odd 4-disc boxset, I think the contents have been virtually, if not totally, identical every single time. ![]() |

Yes it’s annoying. What’s even more annoying is when they advertise the original soundtrack when it’s just fold down of the remix.
I hope the upcoming 4K release meant they went back and got the original mixes. |

Well you know, Blurays were not made to accomodate multiple audio tracks
![]() Just to be clear, it's a dig at what I remember being a selling point for DVDs and later Blurays that you could have dozens of audio tracks, dubbed versions in many languages, many extras, and in the end most major releases only one two tracks if you're lucky. When I see a movie with just one language I shake my head. |
