Default George Ou - ZDNet: Don’t believe the low bit-rate ‘HD’ lie

Don’t believe the low bit-rate ‘HD’ lie

He goes on the attack against various incarnations of low bit-rate HD, including downloads and 1280×1080 HD-lite from Direct TV.

The bit-rate for downloadables is simply pathetic, I would really hate to see any busy or complex backgrounds. Over at another forum, people are chanting the demise of Blu-ray because of Apple TV (cheering for some). It's like their girlfriend just dumped them and instead of looking to the other woman in the picture, they went out and got a cheap immitation (the inflatable kind).

The following is a sample from AVSForum user Xylon who digitally ripped some images from DIRECTV and Dish Networks satellite service 1.5 years ago.
HD-Lite is no longer an issue on Directv. That is a battle that has been all but won. Only a very small handful of channels on D* are downrezzed. I'm not even sure if HDNet and HDNet movies are still downrezzed. They look spectacular. Discovery HD Theater is a channel I hardly watch anymore since you can be sure to watch the full rez shows featured on their home channels. TLC, Discovery, etc. are full resolution MPEG-4. They look amazing.
