Upgrade an eligible PlayStation®4 game to the digital PlayStation®5 version

Certain PS4™ games can be upgraded to the digital PS5™ version of the game on a PS5 console. Find out how to upgrade eligible PS4 games on the PS5 console.

When using a PS5™ console, you may have the option to upgrade a disc or digital PS4 game to the digital PS5 version. Depending on the game, this upgrade may occur at no additional cost, may require a purchase, and may be available for a limited time. An internet connection is required.

Upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc on a PS5 console with a disc drive
To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.

1. Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console (or create an account).
2. Insert the eligible PS4 game disc.
3. Go to the game hub for the PS4 game.
4. Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
5. Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content.
6. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.

Upgrade an eligible PS4 digital game on a PS5 console with a disc drive or PS5 Digital Edition
To upgrade an eligible digital PS4 game you already own to the digital PS5 version:

1. Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console.
2. Find the PS5 game in PlayStation Store, or by Search, and go to the game hub for the PS5 game.
3. Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
4. Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content.
5. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 game.

Okay, i think given the next gen upgrade will be a thing for the first year on some cross generation titles. I thought we could put those titles in one thread and what the upgrade path is.

I know Cyberpunk 2077 has a PS5 patch available come launch and CDPR will offer a full free upgrade to the next gen edition around a year after.

Personally i know this has been discussed to death but i feel that if Activision, EA etc. were more friendly. I think a good compromise would have been for them to offer a 1 time use code with new games and make the disk users pay that "Digital Upgrade" of $10.

For Kena, I hope there's a PS5 disc version ready to go when that game is released, alongside a PS4 version, considering they mention a PS5 upgrade for the PS4 version, which made me wonder about that. If there's a wait, then I would wonder why they revealed the game as a PS5 game during Sony's PS5 conference. But looking forward to learning more about that game and the landscapes.

But yeah, the next question is, how long will these upgrades last in terms of "limited time offer" or "unlimited upgrade time"?

See, I couldn't call CoD a free upgrade, you have to pay $10 more for the cross gen version. So basically you are buying the next gen version at $70 and you have access to the last gen version.

If Square Enix keeps Marvel’s Avengers going for a few years with new maps, missions & heroes, I’ll likely download the free update on PS5.

So far the game runs ok on PS4 Pro @ 4K Dynamic / 30FPS

Crystal has confirmed to have been using a PS5 dev kit to make the game look & play much better on PS5.

Other than graphic improvements, they’ve already promised 4K @ 60FPS

What about The Last of Us part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima? I assume both will be playable, but are they getting any kind of PS5 boost? I'm saving both of them for the 5 (but haven't purchased yet)

For the Ultimate edition of Control, they should just offer a plain old PS5 version of the game. Instead, it seems they're offering the same disc version, extras, and then a free upgrade digitally. Probably because they don't want to print up new discs, if they're not going to offer a PS5 disc.

LOU2 and Tsushima I'd buy for the PS5 versions, though I can't imagine how they're going to make the LOU2 look any better with those amazing visuals as it already is. It's like how do you make art look better than art? Other than higher resolutions?

I'll be shocked if Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima don't get upgrades.

I expect Horizon to get one as well if not at launch closer to the sequel's release with the PC version. The enhancements already exist.

God of War seems like a prime candidate to get one too. Uncharted 4 is probably a bit too old.
