Sony Music Japan will release the video Mariah Carey: Live at the Tokyo Dome (1996) on Blu-ray as part of the Japanese release of The Rarities CD.

Please note that the Blu-ray is exclusive to the Japanese release. Other editions of of The Rarities will only have the two CD discs.

This video may have been released previously in Japan in 1996. There are online references to it being Mariah Carey's first DVD worldwide, but I can find no trace of an official Japanese release on any video format.

If I am reading the translation correctly, the concert was filmed in analogue HD, so it may or may not be true HD on Blu-ray, depending on how it has been remastered.

Supposedly, the second CD on all versions of The Rarities contains the audio from this concert. On Wikipedia, there is a supposed tracklist for the second CD and this concert giving a run time of 79:17, but I don't believe the official run time has been given by Sony Music Japan, yet.

The 1996 Tokyo Dome show was never released officially on DVD. There are bootlegs that exist out there, though. The show was only ever shown on TV broadcast in Japan. (It might’ve aired in other places, but I only know of Japan).

It looks like Sony has definitely gone back and truly remastered this show. Last year, Mariah uploaded the live performance of All I Want For Christmas Is You (AIWFCIY) from this same show. The footage differs greatly from the bootleg rips that fans have uploaded on YouTube. Other than the obvious picture quality upgrade, the frame has also been opened up. I would assume that they would not have remastered only this specific performance and went through with doing the whole show.

Her team had all AIWFCIY performances from this specific show taken off YouTube, but I’ve linked the existing bootleg rip of the rest of the show for comparison.

AIWFCIY HD Remaster:

Original / Bootleg:

Any way to get this release in the US? I looked into ordering from Amazon.jp, but they won't ship to the US. As both a huge Mariah fan and a huge Blu-ray fan, I really want to get it!

They will currently ship the standard edition (i.e. not the Amazon exclusive with the "mega jacket" bonus):

It's currently 18% off (¥6,314) and with tax off to the USA it will be ¥5,760 (or less if the price drops) plus ¥1,977 shipping.

The Amazon exclusive might be unlocked for shipping to the USA after the release date, if you'd prefer to wait and see.

Oooh, thanks for that! I couldn't order either one when I checked the other day. Any idea what the "mega jacket" is? I haven't heard anything about it.

I'm not sure, but my guess would be it's an LP-sized version of the cover art.

Still unable to find a clear explanation of what this "mega jacket" is, I skipped trying to find a way to order it (since it still can't be shipped to the US) and ordered the standard version instead. It's the Blu-ray I was after anyway and the standard version has it (in addition to the new album).

Not sure what a mega jacket is. Haven’t seen that listed anywhere. My copy I’m importing from CD Japan (which came to $90; worth it but yikes!) lists this extra that is supposed to ship with my purchase: “External Bonus: postcard feat. cover artwork”

Well now I don't feel so bad about the $75 I had to pay to Amazon.jp.

Yeah it was $22 for shipping alone. Pretty crazy lol. I tried checking Amazon JP when she first announced the album and Blu-ray, but it wouldn’t let me order at the time to ship to the US.

Yeah, that's what made me start a separate thread about the best way to import from Japan! But then the non-mega jacket version became available to order for shipment to the US, so I jumped on it.

It’s £90 for me to import this

I’m listening to the live recording right now and I really want to own this concert. At least she’s releasing it onto YouTube, I guess

I've listened to The Rarities on Spotify first thing this morning (that will have to suffice until I have this physical copy) and I TOTALLY agree with you! I've watched some of the videos from it on YouTube over the years, but I'm really excited to have it in HD on Blu-ray.

My Amazon.jp order has gone from Preparing for Shipment this morning to Shipping Now this afternoon, so hoping it gets sent soon!

I’ve been in love with Slipping Away for years (she even sang some of it when I saw her in London last year) so hearing it in a good quality was such a great experience for me. I’ve watched the bootleg of the concert so many times over the years, I just can’t justify £70-£90 for it

Mine is coming via DHL as well, with a delivery date of Tuesday - nice! That's definitely faster than I expected.

I ordered from CD Japan as well, and it's coming via FedEx. Will I have to pay import charges? I've never imported anything lol.

---
These obviously aren't legit screencaps, but it's at least something to show for the quality.

Here is what the disc looks like as well.

Yes, I can't wait! She released the entire HD version of the concert on her YouTube channel yesterday, so I skipped around and watched a few minutes of it - looks really good! Looking forward to watching the whole thing on Blu-ray next week.

Thanks for the image of the disc, too! I hadn't seen that.
